Where do I find Texture Templates?

KharmaKharma Posts: 3,214

I am looking through the product library and I noticed there are alot of products with no texture templates..for example I searched for west and all the Old west and West park items came up and there are no texture templates listed for them so where am I to find these if I want to try creating new textures for these? I thought templates were supposed to be listed for all items

Not all products have texture templates, only some of them.  Some people have created texture templates for a few products separately, search for Snow Sultan for example.

Although I've not actually tried, you could simply use an existing material as a texture template, and paint over it (either using it as a layer underneath the layer you are painting on, or even literally painting directly over a copy of it.  (Don't forget to make the copy so you don't mess up the original!)

This is another reason why I wish the OBJ was still included, as I often used to make templates from the OBJ file.

Certainly wish DAZ would make it a requirement to be included as they obviously exist or how would they have been textured in the first place?

  • Depending on what the items are, there may not be a need for texture templates specific to it; this will be true for any G3F or G3M figure that uses the base UV's, for example.

G3f and G3M have templates in the starter essentails whcih would be used to create materials for them, as in my example of the old west series which is the main object not a texture file for it there are no templates in the product library. If there are no templates supplied, which there should be, how do you make them if you want to make new textures for that item?

@sreich how would that be done?  If i look at some textures for items they are simply flood filled and that means there is no actual shape for individual parts of the map as far as I can tell

You know, I completely forgot that some textures are like that.  You are right, that is problematic for those that don't have an obvious outline in the supplied material.

FYI, I went to my west park folder, and I do see templates there.  However I don't see them in the downloads page.  so I don't know where I got them, but they must be available somewhere, unless I have the wrong ones in that folder.  Perhaps somebody else knows where they came from? Old West bathhouse has templates as well.  I don't have any for the Old West Saloon.  I haven't checked the others.  I vaguely recall templates used to be downloaded from the store page, not from the downloads page, but that changed.  Maybe these got missed during the old web site update, and they're just hidden in DAZ archives somewhere with no link?

I think the West Park texture templates I have installed came in one of the REALLY old executable installers, 11912_7_tx_WestPark_7.exe .

I don't really know much about it because I haven't used it for many years, but I think UVMapper ( I think at http://www.uvmapper.com/  ) can be used to create texture templates if you want to learn how to use it, but research that option a bit first.

thanks for the info, I am going to dig a little deeper into my folders and see if there are any templates in there that auto d/L with the package but have to run out for a bit so will get into that when I get back home

All products (models) on Daz3d are mapped.

If you have the extremely handy UVMapper utility, and no obj's, you can easily get your templates from UVMapper by exporting the model in Studio as an obj and then opening it in UVmapper, and then saving the template to whatever size you want.

I rely on the Internet Archive "Wayback Machine" - for example: http://web.archive.org/web/20130317093633/http://www.daz3d.com/old-west-bath-house

The templates (if they ever existed) are under the Resource Files tab. For older products they will be installers .exe/.sit files for PC/MAC respectively. For newer products they will be .zip files (like the ones available in Product Library here).

You just need the current url for the product from the store, go to the Wayback Machine at http://archive.org/web/ type in the url and it will list any available old versions it has archived. To get Resource Files you need to pick a version from before they move to the current DAZ Store format - go for a date in 2013 if you can. Occasionally the template file is shown, but when you try to download it can't be found, in which case it's worth trying a different date from the list it offers you. And not every product had templates even in the old store pages.

ETA: I was once told to open a ticket if templates that should exist aren't in Product Library - I raised a couple early on (after the store change) but gave up eventually as it's a bit of a hassle.

    E2: Clarify and fix typos.

I've always pulled my own using UV mapper (the free version) because then I can choose if I want them colored by material and I get all the matched up colors for seams.

I've messed around with this option some.  There was a lot of trial & error, but I managed to turn a herd of low-res zombies into a well-dressed crowd of low-res party-goers.
