Robo-spines

So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to do a character. The person has a replacement spine, and the spine from the Bot Armor for G2F (http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-2-female-bot-armor) works perfectly. Except for the *small* issue that it takes over much more of the torso, too (and the neck.) I just need the spine (and perhaps the area immediately to the sides.)

The spine isn't a "costume piece" - it seems to replace the torso (understandably.) Digging through settings, it's not that the torso itself is hidden, either - at least not as far as dropping opacity or the like. Replacing its texture with the character's default skin doesn't look right, either... and setting the rest of the "shell" opaque, of course, lets you see through the model. Not quite the effect I'm looking for. :)

It *looks* like, to use just the bit I want, I'm going to have to do two renders, one with the spine, one without, and just do the postwork, layering one on top of the other, erasing what I don't want. Which is fine - I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything that would eliminate having to do that first.

Alternately - is there another product that would fit this?
