What about Genesis 8.1? - Looking for contemporary witnesses

Hello!

I don't have much experience with older Daz products and their history, because my first steps into this world were not long ago. Lack of language skills could also lead to the wrong tone or similar. So if I ask something emotionally triggering, please tell me. Then I won't ask anymore (here). I just hope I'm not addressing anything here that has already started arguments.

There is or was a product line between G8 and G9: G 8.1. It is till now in the main drop down menu but leads nowhere (a.k.a. ''oops!''). For both main characters are no items available (74/ 24 means in the DS world nearly nothing). I understand that most G8 stuff are usable with G8.1, but G8.1 is not backwards compatible. So it's no ssuch a surprise that there's a lot less for G8.1.

But at least expressions should be available because it seems the face joint were the big step forward in this generation.

Long story short: What is behind the fact that this was discontinued so quickly? And were there any advance warnings?

It wasn't. Genesis 8.1 was the primary product line for basically 21 months, from 20th Jan 2021 (release of Victoria 8.1) to 16th Oct 2022 (release of Victoria 9); and at the time a two-ish year product cycle was fairly normal. Genesis 1 was actually slightly shorter at 20 months, but Genesis 2 and 3 lasted about two years, and Genesis 8.0 was unusual in being three years seven months.

If you consider G8.1 as an extension of G8, then the five years four months it lasted was pretty considerable. Beaten by Victoria 4, I think, but with the very different release pace back then,

The reason why there's not much specifically for G8.1 is that G8.1 can use almost all G8.0 content, so even when G8.1 was the current generation, most content that wasn't characters or expressions was still being set up for G8.0, because G8.1 could use it just fine.

For both main characters are no items available (74/ 24 means in the DS world nearly nothing)

That said, I'm not sure where you're getting these numbers from; the store has hundreds and hundreds of characters specifically for G8.1.

Well, I didn't come up with the idea of picking out the release dates. Thanks for that.

The numbers came from the store or, more precisely, from the search function. I found for Michael 8 14 derivate (Theo, Quinton, Garrett, Randy, Kian, Zander, Martin, Spencer, Bruno, Marc, Harrison, Cameron, Steven, Raynard). For Michael 8.1. two (Thomas and Trance).

Addendum: Expression is simply "very few". Impossible to be more precisely because the search function for it de facto does not exist. If you choose "G8.1." + "expression" you get a mess of poses for G8 (!), characters and... whatever.

Don't forget that with the introduction of Genesis, Michael and VIctoria stopped being the name for the main overall male and female product lines, just the names of specific base figures.  Male G8.1 figures are generally listed as Genesis 8.1 Male in the various sort/search funcitons whereas in the rare occasions where a product specifies Michael 8.1, it generally is a modifer that requires that you already have the Michael 8.1 base figure installed in order for the new figure shape to load properly.  A quick look at the store that there are currently 613 specific character products listed for Genesis 8.1 Male, as opposed to 1269 for Genesis 8 Male, 1388 for Genesis 8.1 Female, and 3710 for Genesis 8 Female... although, of course, many of those products may be actually set up to work with serveral different generations of bases at the same time.
