Product Updates - will they still work in DS 4.xx? is the old version still available for DL?

davesodaveso Posts: 8,349

I have quite a few product updates in my DIM installation, but I'm afraid to update them. I've found some that were updated to work in DS6, but do they still work correctly in DS4.xx? This shuld be stated somewhere in the product - mandatory, as to their status.

What happens if you haven't downloaded the product before, now you do and it contains an update to DS6. Will it work or not, and if it doesn't , is the older version stil available?

I still haven't been able to get Figure Metrics to work. Or Measure Metrics. Or whatever it's called. But I did recently update to DAZ Studio 6 so maybe I should try again.

If the PA is available and making updates for DS6, it is unlikely they will break the DS4 version. And if it does break, they'll likely fix it. But this isn't a yes/no question. It depends entirely on what the plugin is and what the PA is willing to do. The existence of an update says the PA is still around. Find them. Ask them. Some of the PAs post frequently in the PA subforum. (And some of them don't.)

You can always backup the prior version. The plugin is in the roaming\Studio4\plugins directory.

@jmucchiello  thank you. I;ll start putting some messages out.. Overall though, I'm not willing to take the chance. I think. sometimes i just get, whatever and just do it, and if it no longer works I'm out my money and wont bother with it anymore. I  dont use a good percent of the products I've purchased anyway so a few that don;t work wouldn't matter much..

Yeah, i just don't do updates anymore. Ive been burned a couple times already by updates that were supposed to work with DS4, but then surprise, they didn't after they were updated for DS6. So then I waste my time trying to figure out where the problem lies, doing free product testing for things that previously worked, spending days going back and forth with customer service trying to resolve an issue, only to reinstall old DIMs. So its not worth the risk.

I have about 10 updates for products in DIM that I will never update now. Maybe they work, maybe they don't, but I won't waste time being the guinea pig and testing them. I think all these updates for DS6 for plugins and scripts should have been kept completely separate from the DS4 versions. Why didn't PAs just create new items, have them discounted for previous owners? Then the PAs would get some extra money for their time, and the previous owners who don't want the updates wouldn't have to worry about their previously working products getting overwritten with things that no longer work in DS4? This was a bad idea all around.

We ( Script writing PAs ) have two routes to take, and both comes with pros and cons.

Update so it works both in DS 4 and DS 6, but that does leave out functionallity only available in DS 6 ( as the scripts has to survive being parsed in 4 so you cannot use anuything DS 6 / ECMA 7 specific.
Make a new product purely for DS 6, which sometimes is easier but then you get complains for "making a new and not updating an existing".

I've decided to turn more scripts into plugins for DS 6 as that makes better overall products, faster and more robust and also easier to work with, but downside is it is time consuming.

I think people are more worried about the free updates for DS6 compatibility. It's really nice of the PAs who are updating older stuff for free, but since a lot of us aren't switching over to 6 because a lot of the older tools we use still won't work in 6, we worry about the stuff we bought for 4 not working anymore. If a PA chooses to update a product for free and happens to add new features because DS6 can do more now, then I personally would not be upset with the PA for not changing the original. I would just want the original to work in DS4 the way I needed it to work.

I need the Install Manager to tell me when updating something will make it stop working for me.

If you are using the current DS versions an updatre shouldn't stop a product from working. There have been issues, mostly related to installation, where that has happened but I think those have (eventually) been fixed.

Of course, you could always run a DS4.xx install side by side with your DS6 install, that way older plugins that haven't been updated can still be used and you have access to the newer tools.

Thanks Richard, that's encouraging, but I do still agree with @NylonGirl here. As long as we have two program versions that people use side by side, DIM or another app should be able to tell us, based on our installation, if the current updates are for us or not. It's bad enough that there's no compatability info on the product pages anymore.

Exactly. I don;t  need updates for 6. I just need the products I bought for DS 4.xx to continue working in DS4.xx, and I have no room on my system for 2 installations. I have no intention at this time of moving along into DS6, but I wuld also ike to see any updates to existing products to ^ be a separate product, be it free or purchsed, that just plainly states , for DS6. When I see 20 updates in DIM and there is no readme, or anything pertaining to what the update is, I'm not installing it. I also have no intention of screwing up my DS4.xx products with DS6 updates and then have to waste my time trying to figure out why it no longer works. DAZ , or the PAs, need to be more explicit to what exactly is being updated and how it responds to working in DS4.xx. I'm sure not everyone is moving to DS6.

DS6 on my system takes up an extra 2 GB, plugins included. There's only one content library that they share. Plugins don't go in the content library for DS4 or DS6.
