What should go in the "My Library" folder?

I have discovered lots of odd files in both "My Library" and the "Runtime" folder within it, some of which prevent content from working properly because they are not where they should be (I blame lazy content creators ) so what SHOULD be in these folders? I vaguely remember an old posting that suggested answers to this question but I cannot find it now, and it would be good to have this info for people.

thankyou

All sorts of things should eb there, in various locations. It might be easier if you gave some examples of things you believe are mis-placed.

I have absolutely nothing in my Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio Library on my Macintosh computers. DIM installed the content into Uers/Shared/My DAZ 3D Library by default.

On my Mac, I put non-DAZ products (and sharecg freebies) in Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Libary; it makes those things a bit easier to find.

you do not need a "my library" folder at all

you can have it if you like

you can customise all folder as you want them to be

just point content directory manager at the right location

The default arrangement when DIM became available was to use "My DAZ 3D Library" (in the public.shared user) for items installed with DIM, and "My Library" (in the specific user) for everything else.  "My Library" appears first so that anything you create will end up there.

You can tell DIM where you want your content to be installed. The first thing I did when I started using DIM was to redirect to my (Mac) personal folders instead of Users/Shared.

As for My Library, I use that for non-DIM content - I still have a lot of V4/M4 stuff in there with the old Poser style runtime.

Note that "My Library" is only a previous default name for your content folder — it's changed and moved around in various versions of D|S. Just because your current content folder has that name from an old D|S installation doesn't mean it must always have that name, or that there's something wrong with content folders with other names. Look in your Content Directory Manager dialog to check what your D|S currently thinks the content folder name and location should be.

Somewhere I read a specific reason why this was recommended, but can't find it or remember the reason now.

If it's the same reason I remember, it came about after people were confused by the new extra DIM installation location. It's to keep installed-by-DIM content separate from everything else, so that there's less chance of a DIM installation or removal of content interfering with manually installed content. It makes sense, I suppose, since if DIM thinks it's just deleted the last files in a folder, it ought to try to delete the folder. Whether or not there's still manually installed files in it.

Actually it's mostly the opposite -- if DIM finds a file already there when it installs something, it notes that it SHOULDN'T delete it if it uninstalls that product.

Ah, OK. That was the impression I've got over the years, though, from various DAZ_Folks telling us "don't do that, then".

  • Why everybody love Daz Studio that never works? Poser was a beautiful software, intuitive, easy to use and very effective. I do not understand why to insist on promoting Daz Studio (after previous versions) which is a real nightmare and has never worked easily.
Confused, difficult and always with problems even with the models installed by DIM. I 'm a MAC user, and I spent entire days installing and then uninstalling both the software and all the models that I can't open in Poser since lot of them are made only for Daz Studio , but when I launch it, I have NEVER found my models, at most 3 o4.
This software is a nightmare. Maybe I'm getting old, but it's impossible to work with it.
Some of you are kind enough to explain to me how to find all my models installed either manually or with DIM. You would give me a present.

For me it is easier to have all products / assets under that central location (My Library) which I want to have included in my scenes.

So I installed all (and I really mean ALL) products out of the DAZ and all other shops, incl. freebees, under that central location.
For the usage it doesn't matter, which vendor or community delivered the assets. It must be found under a central entry point !

  • The problem is that, when I lounch Daz Studo, libraries are epty or exit the message "file doesn't exist" even if all the models are been installed by DIM! So far I don't discover how to resume all installed models. Whereare they hidden?

Yes, with such beautifully intuitive things as putting material settings in the Pose folder.

I have been debating for a while now to move EVERYTHING into one directory. Its a pain sometimes to scroll to all the directories to find what i need when i mix stuff installed with DIM and manual inmstalled stuff from other sites.

I have been hesitant as i feared assets not being loaded properly (unable to find) but from what i get that should not be the case. Maybe i should just go for it. Its more then often i use DIM and non DIM stuff together.

You will always find properly installed content in properly mapped libraries in the Content Library pane.  The Smart Content pane will only show content that has metadata.  Poser and Studio both use the same relative addressing pricinpals so if you can understand one there is no reason you should have problems with the other.

    Of cause.

For foreign stuff, as well as for own creations, you have to categorize and classify the entries manually for usage in smart content.
