I've been meaning to say this for decades. Please believe I mean this with the utmost respect.

I see no need to quote someone when responding to a post. I will never read the quoted parts.

I have a scattered mind, and always avoid unnecessary words. 

In my own experience you can easily incorporate a few words into your response.

Example:

(Response to this post).

Ron, I see you hate quotes. I understand, but totally disagree.

 

Thank you for listening, and please don't quote me.

    Sometimes it can be handy to save a comment being taken out of context. But seeing numerous stacked quotes does raise the hackles a bit.

    On one hand, I always edit my quotes down to the relevant information I'm replying to when it's not the immediate focus of the conversation. 

    On the other, it's not very intuitive to do so. 

    On a third, the nested quotes are almost painful to scroll through on mobile.

    Personally, i like stacked quotes because I hate going through pages in a thread to understand the nuance of a thread in one place and partly, as time goes on, context gets lost in a long thread so it is nice to see the exact wording.  Granted, my computer scrolls easily and I often use the search function on a web page. I can see how it could annoying for someone on a phone but there are trade offs as always.  I will confess that the urge to nest all the quotes above was enormous.

    I'm notoriously lazy. I won't scroll through and entire thread for any reason. (Unless someone offers me money!)

    If I join an ongoing thread for the first time, I still don't scroll. I just try to be nice while I eventually get the drift of the conversation.

    I used to irritate my friends over the years. I asked them not to quote. And I asked them to stop sending me chain mail emails or stupid jokes!

    I got rid of many friends that way.

    PS: my laziness is actually a way of attempting to increase efficiency and make progress in my struggle to maintain emotional stability.

    I read many influential books in the past. One helpful book was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance.

    To me, quotes of the relevant phrase or chain of posts - responses are really the only way to foster correct communication, as we often have threads where multiple people are posting nearly simultaneously, making even a rapid response appear multiple messages down.  Without at least identifying the post that you're responding to, one will only engender confusion.

    stacked quotes are the bane of my forum search attempts 

    the worst culprit is the complaint thread

    it renders the forum search unusable and severely impacts Google search too

    I do generally edit my quotes to just the bit I am replying to

    or I copy the username I am

    I gave up searching the forums, again.

    The results are all too often disappointing.
