if i cut and scale g9 materials to fit the eye uvs for g8.1 is it possible to get them to work?

The eye textures on 8.1 models look formated similiarly to g9 if I remove and scale the materials to match how g8.1 eye textures are mapped is it posible to use g9 materials in that way? I was going to do it with the normals and displacement and bump maps as well.

Yes, as long as you have the textures well aligned as much as possible based on the UV templates in image editor.

Altanatively, if you have these products:
    https://www.daz3d.com/legacy-uvs-for-genesis-9-genesis-3-8-and-81-female
    https://www.daz3d.com/legacy-uvs-for-genesis-9-genesis-3-8-and-81-male

...you can easily convert the texture maps by using Surface pane > Map Transfer, with G8 eyes UV Sets on G9 eyes node.

the g9 uv to 8.1, is there any down side to going this route, it uses geoshells so i though that would make the model more heavy?

They use geografts... not geoshells.  In your case, actually you would just adopt the UV Sets from the products for texture map convertions...rather than use the geografts to apply G8 texture maps.

Anyway, since you don't have the products, you don't have to buy them, using image editor will do.  That was just a reminder from me~~

No you don't need any plugin, it's a built-in function in DS. You can find it  from the context menu in the upper left corner of Surfaces pane > Map Transfer. See the screenshots down below ~

Edit: Mesh of G8 EYES is different from G9's, so the size as well as the outer rim of irises will not be very same. You have to make a morph for them if needed ~~

Funnily enough I was looking into creating G9 UV's for G8/8.1 eyes, that way no conversion would be necessary - if there is demand for such a product, then I'll add it to my shortlist to pick back up again :)

I ever tried a UV projection from G8 > G9 in Blender 3.x but the result was not 100% perfect ~~ will try again with 5.x.

    Thanks for the reminder !

that would be really great if you did, the eyes are the only reason i would use g9

IIRC my earlier tests were promising - projection is never going to be perfect which is difficult to admit as a perfectionist, but one thing I've had to learn (otherwise I would never finish a product) is to be realistic about what is good enough :)

A bit different, but related to the subject: is it possible to use eyes materials for Genesis 8 or 8.1 on Genesis 3? (I have the beautiful eyes from Chevybabe for 8.1 in mind).

    honestly

    eyes are round

it isn't that hard in a photo editor to eliptically select, scale and transform the parts of the texture

copy/paste layers into an existing texture for the other figure etc

    just cannot redistribute it

I have even taken a selfie of one of my own irises and pasted as a layer on a DAZ texture

the sclera textures are generally circular too

i.e. tweak the eyeballs' mesh in external software e.g. Blender, then send the tweaked eyeballs back to DS to create a fix Morph ~

In ss1, the pupils are problematic, create a fix Morph for them in ss2.

G3 and G8 have almost same UV maps for eye surfaces, you can just assign the G8 texture maps to G3

one of the most helpful lessons I learned from an animation teacher, that applies to anything i think, was to "never be precious with your animation" that you are fine starting over anytime cause you only get faster at doing it.

edit: i think it applies to the inverse too not being picky and able to call something done

i must admit I have not read a single post inthis thread so apologies if this was already mentioned, but you can put G9 eyes on G8/G8.1. Meaning, you can fit the G9 eyes to G8.   So there is no need to do anything like UVs etc.

How? There is a thread somewhere.

Right, we pretty much focused on the texture topic. Rigging G9 eyes to G8 is just a good alternative. I probably know the thread you mentioned: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/599041/jeepers-creepers-i-gave-g8-g9-s-peepers/p1

Then I would suggest some improvement based on the workflow:
    1) After tweaking transforms of G9 Eyes, export to OBJ, Update Base Geometry > Vertex Position with the loaded OBJ;
    2) Directly re-rig G9 Eyes figure rather than its exported / imported OBJ. In this way, all morphs on G9 Eyes can be preserved, i.e. they're still G9 Eyes rather than a brand new figure with which you have to do more extra work.
    3) After rigging / tweaking G9 Eyes, set up Auto Hide with Geometry Editor. This setup can automatically hide G8 Eyes as well as G8 eyesocket polygons behind the G9 eyeballs.. so as to avoid the "light leak" issue in the pupils.
    4) Save a Wearable Preset (or a Figure Asset with your Vendor Name).

This alternative is more difficult than manipulating texture maps, esp for newbies, but always be learning if interested ~

Edit: Better do the rigging job on G8F Base figure, then fix G9 Eye's FHM on custom characters as needed. Then when loading Hierarchical Material Presets of G9 Eyes, change the Node Name of G8 to Genesis9 in Scene Identification...

edit: I had seams showing too and some spots were just transparent like there was no texture, i followed the instructions, I think im going to wait and come back to this then ask for help on the g9 uv for g8.1 thread

Would there still be interest in a G9 eye UV for Genesis 8 figures? I appreciate there are some alternatives as mentioned earlier in this thread, but they all require some work on the artists part to get working.

The intent of my product (if there's enough interest) would be as simple as applying a G9 eye preset to Genesis 8. Obviously the UV work is one part of this, but there would be other behind the scenes things happening so that material presets were compatible.

I obviously don't want to waste valuable time creating something if it's then going to sell poorly - a guy has to pay his bills and eat after all.

it is more obscure so i think it would not sell as well as your other stuff, I would absolutely buy it though if it worked and I could still use morphs like cornea bulge for g8.1 to get the extra light in the eye. unless more people understood the importance of polly count and vram and the difference in quality between g8 and g9 eyes i dont think it would sell as well as like your pbr scripts and stuff. But i could be talking out of my ahole here

there use to be a product called snarls g9 eyes for g8 on renderhub but they took it down and stopped doing 3d stuff. so the counter argument to obscurity would be there are no other products i know of that easily do what youre talking about so you would be filling a vaccum, but again may be talking out of my ahole

Or, go for the way of rigging which is the best way so far ~ You can benefit every strong points from G9 eyeballs.
