Update to that free plugin called Daz Studio - now version 6

DiomedeDiomede Posts: 15,414

I sometimes use Daz Studio as a plugin for useful functions such as rigging. I see they have released version 6. Has anyone installed it? Any reactions? Especially as a plugin for Carrara?

Here is the Daz Studio 6 thread in the Daz Studio forum.  https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/763291/daz-studio-6-25-0-x-general-release#latest

    I installed it to see

    so far it has:

hung my Windows taskbar, had to force a restart no

this version doesn't support auto weight transfers so no more triax to blended weight transfers   and I asked the AI within DS6 why and it replied with all kinds of weird stuff. angry

so, for Carrara users don't lose your previous version of DS if you want to do simple weight transfers which Carrara users need to use DS models in Carrara. no

Unless there is a new different process to do it which I can't find.

I never even dug that deep to see that

definitely another reason I won't bother with it of which there are many

its good for Mac users who want Filament and people with 5### cards

but really just a render node for D|S4 saved scenes with some laggy UI features tossed in

Do the conversion in Daz Studio 4.20–4.24 (the reliable method)

This is still the most stable and predictable workflow.

Why it works: DS 4.x still contains the full Triax → General Weight conversion pipeline, including the hidden ERC and JCM migration logic.

    Workflow:

    1. Load the Triax figure in DS 4.x

    2. Edit → Figure → Rigging → Convert Figure to General Weight

    3. Save as a new figure asset

    Give six the flix! yes

DS6 no longer exposes the Triax → General Weight conversion option anywhere in the UI, and users are actively reporting that they cannot find it .

    There is no:

    • Menu option

    • Script

    • Plugin

    • Hidden pane

…that replicates the DS4.x conversion. no

I think, right now, the only non-negotiable reason to move to DS6 is if you need to render using Iray on a 50x0 series graphics card. From what I read in the linked thread above, it's not an especially smooth transition. I suspect (and I could be wrong!) the code for the triax-to-general weight conversion is contained in a plug-in that has not been updated for DS6. I looked at the list of plug-ins in DS 4.23 and just about everything seems to be packaged in a plug-in. I don't know which one it would be, but that's why I think the triax-to-general weight conversion capability is MIA in DS6. Otherwise, I guess Daz devs omitted it for their own reasons.

yep, it's been a normal setting in all versions of DS4 but not in 6

and their AI assistant says so.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It appears the primary reason I open Daz Studio these days, as a rigging tool, is actually less useful in Daz Studio 6 than in Daz Studio 4.  Maybe it will be addressed in updates to Daz Studio 6, but so far I don't see any reason to be an early adopter.
