This is a longshot but could you get the shop coupon programming to give a reason why a coupon is invalid?

Instead of the uninformative: Coupon code is not valid

It could instead say:

• Unknown Coupon Code
• Coupon Code has expired
• Coupon Code has already been redeemed
• Required items are not in cart

And so on. "Coupon code is not valid" should be the final resort "reason". It seems like a sales front that relies so heavily on coupon codes would have this to be more encouraging.
