HD Add-On's should be default / Free + Price Discussion
Hello friends,
My argument that HD Add-on should be default / free is this - The HD version is not made later, it must ready at release, so why charge more for it (I understand it is a business decision to make money) It is like in videogames when they release a new game with day one DLC. The practace is anti-consumer.
There is a difference though, if HD was the standard, renders for all users would be better, which promotes the benefits of DAZ compared to competing software and in particular AI.
Daz3d is better than AI in too many ways to mention, except for price - I think prices of new DAZ Items have been creeping up lately at a time when they should be trying to be competitive.
I am a budget concious DAZ buyer, I only purchase during specials or go for older products (unless they ever release 'The Girl' 9)
I was a member of premier for a while at the beginning, but it was obvious that the best parts of the bundle were added to the starter pack upgrade bundles.
Again, I understand Daz is a business and needs to make money - but it this economy it is very difficult to afford the figures, clothes, hair, props and enviroments that one would like.
Anyway, thank you for reading :)

I don't know that free would be plausible, but for a brief and beautiful time, the HD was included with the base figures. But people complained that they never used it and it was just taking up unnecessary HDD space and they hated it, so Daz stopped bundling the HD with the base figure. It's unfortunate in my opinion. It would be nice if they'd go back to that.
Daz originally said HD was included with Genesis 9 figures. Then after some time they started charging extra for the HD.
when they advertise a product, call it HD, and the HD is an extra, this should stop, including promo images for the character that utilize HD elements. I do think the character and HD[rodct should be available as one product for those that want it, maybe reduced pricing, like half or something, kind of like is done when buying 2 DAZ+ items. In the Character Bundle there would be a bundle with and one without the HD element, with price set accordingly. I would say to just have an HD version of the character, buts its good to have a non-HD character when needed.
and this is why I prefer PA products which are mostly HD by default and nobody is stopping anyone from sliding the subdivision down if desired
true, nice and simple
I also agree with @WendyLuvsCats . That said, historically, HD add-ons have been extra-cost items for Daz core figures. I also see that HD add-ons have been showing up a lot in QG and OS as low-tier items. At the $.99/$1.99 price point, I have no qualm with buying them, especially when I really like the character or when the character gains a lot from the HD morph. At this moment, with a membership, you can get both https://www.daz3d.com/nida-8 and https://www.daz3d.com/nida-8-hd-add-on for $1.98. That's not really breaking the bank and I think Nida's HD add-on definitely enhances the look of the character.
I agree, the HD add-ons should either be included with the base character, or be no more than half the price of the base character. One of the reasons I stopped buying the main characters after Genesis 8 is just because the price of the base plus the HD was and is too high. And I still have genesis 8 characters in my wishlist, waiting for them to cycle through sales or QG/OS to pick them up.
It's also frustrating that the bases and HD add-ons never seem to be on sale or in the QG/OS stores at the same time either.
Torquinox You have mentioned "At this moment, with a membership, you can get both https://www.daz3d.com/nida-8 and https://www.daz3d.com/nida-8-hd-add-on for $1.98"
However, I do not like the idea to buy just one or two components of a bundle when the whole thing could be bought for a price that can meet the expectations, I would go for the Pro one, is a shame that the bundles are so expensive, also I understand Daz has to make money, but for some of us, the economy is so tight, and there is a need to cut corners to figure out which items are really needed (is a priority prroject or something else?) There should be a way to accomodate the needs of the users, so everyone could be a winner.
This is my sincere opinion.
I understand. I will say, without a membership, those two items are $3.98 - if that's all you're going to buy, it's still ok. Economy is tough for a lot of people, myself included.
Big bundles do sometimes go on sale at unbelievable discounts. I got https://www.daz3d.com/kola-81-mega-bundle and https://www.daz3d.com/coral-81-mega-bundle for $3.99 each on one flash sale. But no one can say when or why these things happen.
For g8 and earlier, the HD add on is not usually included in the pro bundle.
I'm not defending the practice of selling HD add ons separately. I'm pointing out that it's something Daz has done for a long time. At least now sometimes we can grab those add ons for a buck or 2.
You can then buy the rest of the Pro or whatever bundle cheaper once you own the figure &/or HD, or any other components. The owned item discounts on bundles are very good, as good or better than Daz's usual sales, & increase with how many you own. They don't depend on how much you paid for what you own - free, full price, Outlet/Quick Grab - & do stack with other discounts & tokens. (Unless the bundle is in a deal like OS/QG or "get X items for $Y.99" where stacking doesn't happen.)
Good points! I admit, I usually end up buying bundles in flash sales and such when no other discounts apply. Even when I own a couple items out of the bundle, it often works out.
I've never really understood the point of Daz characters over and above PA ones.
Once upon a time there were a handful of Daz characters and each of them brought something distinct and different to the Daz Universe - Stephanie was petite, Aiko was a toon, Teen Josie was.. well, you get the idea.
But now, is there anything really different between (picking at random) Emmy 9 and any other G9 female character? She has a list price of $50, and another $30 on top of that if you want her in HD. Browsing through the PA characters in the shop, a lot of them are HD and they rarely cost more than $25.
I realise that the core characters are often deeply discounted, or actually given away to sweeten the deal on something else, but it's more than a lttle ridiculous. My advice would be to find a PA who's figures you like and buy them instead. Leave the Daz figures for the next fire sale.
Some of the Daz core figures are very nice figures. They often come bundled with other items and sometimes showcase new features. Some of the PA figures are also very nice, may have a lot of extras, and frequently include an HD morph. Both Daz and PA figures often appear at attractive prices; and I have plenty of both. That said, I think Emmy is an attractive figure. I've no idea when I'd get her; but under the right conditions, she could go in the cart. That's true of many, many figures, though.
With those I test to see which way is the better deal.
some of the hd mods are way more detailed than others too and some I can barely see any differance between the basic models and the hd add on
If HD has value, it seems reasonable to charge for them.
when they are included it's not that they are free so much as the creator is trying to add value to a product to get more sales.
I mean it's obviously nice when that value add works out in your favor; I want the product anyway so the attempt to get more sales means I'm getting more for what I already intended to spend.
I will note, as a creator who no longer can make hd... in the VAST majority of cases a good set of Normals is quite sufficient.
I always preferred normal maps and one of my biggest gripes was vendors using HD morphs instead of normals
especially on clothing
making the whole thing highpoly just to add details never made sense
I myself only dial in HDmorphs on facial closeups and hide everything out of view anyway
