    I try to follow the 3-2-1 backup rule: 3 copies of data, on 2 different types of media, with 1 copy stored offsite. The offsite copy could be in the cloud, helps in the case of theft/fire/floods etc.

    ...one of several reasons I disliked later versions Windows after 7 (besides 8's "Fisher Price UI" ).  In 7 Bitllocker was disabled by default whereas with 10 and 11 Microsoft assumed you wanted it on so it was enabled by default..

    Thanks guys for the kind words, and for all the experiences shared into some posts too, this thread is instructive yes , while I wait for the new hard-drive, I'm backing-up all what is worth being "backuped", and have been searching here and there on old hard-drives, didn't check them all yet but so far it seems I can recover a good part of all the personal stuff I had made on G2F figure. I don't use G2F anymore but well... Is better than nothing xD. From now on, will make regular backups, lesson learned. Oh, and it seems I still have some scene files of the most recent stuff, I really doubt I'll be able to recover a "functional" version of that kind of "super-G8" I had made, since some files will obviously be missing here and there while trying to load the scenes, but perhaps I can get some parts at least ? Will know in a few days.

    None of my drives have had it in Windows 10 or 11, so it either wasn't on or there was a prompt/option in the formatting dialogue. That is a home build, pre-installed systems may be different.

    Bitlocker was/is only available on Windows 10/11 PRO

    ...a homebuilder here as well.  That is why I refused the "free" update of 10 which back the was like saying "here Microsoft here's my system do with it as you wish".

    When ever I finally am able to scare up the funds for the much needed upgrade (C'non Megabucks Lotto).  I will do a clean manual install from DVD of 11 and so as much as i can to rid it of "junkware" that I don't want or need.  This was one of the reasons 7 has been so dependable and run with nary a whimper over last 15 years.

    It was difficult enough trying to put away money on a meagre fixed income before memory and storage prices have shot into the exosphere and beyond.

    You can blame AI and the ever increasing demand for data banks because of AI.

    I just bought a new 8tb drive for $179 western digital. and backed up a bunch of stuff. 
    I have 40tb on line, 2 12s 3 8s maybe $600 over the past few years but zip in cost compared to the 15,000 daz items stuff from rend etc. 
    I hope I have 3 copies of everything, sure of two copies of everything.

    currently don't have offsite and that worries me some. 
    back up everything
    but plan . . .  my content library is basiclly on the E drive and the G drive but they basically each have a big up copy, I did have one die years ago, took it offline, changed the drive letter of the backup to match the one that was gone and daz looked at it and said "cool' 
    no rebuilding or reinstalling available.
