Why does Spot Render default to in Viewport?
I use Spot Render when I render scenes in parts or need to fix something. But as far as I knw, the only way to save the render is to render in New Window. Naturally, I hang my head and sigh when I select the tool and start only to realize I didn't change it from the default, render in Viewport, and waste my time.
Does Spot Rendering in Viewport serve a purpose other than previewing? Can I save it in some way as a normal image file? Why is it the default? Thank you.

I copy it and paste it into an image editor
Interesting, I've never heard of this. How do you copy and paste the viewport render? Is it the same resolution as if you rendered it in a new window? Does the spot image line up with the total render? (Rendering the left side stays left instead of centering, if that makes sense?)
DS cannot save Render Target in Spot Render tool as New Window... you have to set it yourself by using a startup script in Preferences...

as the script I showed down below ~~
I am on a Mac so it is an easy keyboard combination but I think that PCs have some kind of functionality for that. Printscreen? It may or may not be the right size of the original render but it is normally easy enough to get lined up. I say it may or may not be the same size because you might be rendering large for which might be outside of the viewport area. Or small, which might be smaller than the viewport. Good luck
