Making Daz Studio portable. How to do it?

I need to carry my entire Daz Studio system with me and be able to run it on any compatable OS on any laptop, desktop, etc. This includes all sql database(s), all my resources, all project data, saved files, etc.

DS must load, function, locate, and SAVE  all   user files to only the portable device, no attempt to save to the host machine or install any part of itself on the host machine.  ie. pure and total portability.  --- can it be done? I am using a 2Tb nvme.2 portable storage

DS uses the registry to store some settings, so you can't make it 100% portable.

Change that "portable device" into a proper laptop. Job Done.

If you require it to "...no attempt to save to the host machine or install any part of itself on the host machine.  ie. pure and total portability...", unfortunately nope ~ it's not possible, because DS writes settings data to Registry (Windows OS) as Leana said, as well as to %appdata%. Some plugins also write to other folders of host machine, etc.

I used to do the similar thing with my PCs and laptops by using an SSD of 4TB but I had to synchronize DS settings from time to time ~~

Do you somewhere you can leave a PC running with Daz Studio on it, while you're off roaming the planet?

If so you could do that, then use remote desktop to connect to it from any device, anywhere you can get a decent signal. I do that sometimes to set off renders when I'm at work - I have the scene all posed and ready on my PC, I connect to it from my phone and pick the cameras and set the renders going. I could connect with a laptop or netbook instead, and create and pose scenes just as if I was sat in front of my machine at home, but that would be harder to get away with when I'm supposed to be working!

Thanks, some useful ideas to consider.

If I can't have it all, maybe moving  all assets to a portable drive would make more working space available, assuming I did not need to load everything every time. My ultimate goal is moving to Linux, but that move will not fix any of this, not even wiith a vm (as far as I know)

I am being forced to downsize due to various private reasons, so laptops are the only solution, but OMG $$$!

Where I work we have a laptop that is suitable for SolidWorks CAD, and is probably a low end capability machine for DS. 32Gb with RTX 3060 laptop GPU, install DS on the machine & have an external HDD library which could be unplugged from your base machine & put on the laptop. Possible, I'd have thought. In the UK you'd be looking at £1500+ for the laptop & would have lower performance than a desktop. But it should work for smaller scenes. Currently my whole library fits in 1Tb.

Where money is literally no object, there are laptop workstations that have the same capability as high end desktop workstations. Silly money, but they replace desktops.

So, can be done. It may be better to use the method suggested by Chris & Wendy.

    Regards,

    Richard

I worked off a laptop for years.  4tb external drive and I took Daz with me wherever I needed too.  If you go that route, make sure you back up your external drive regularly
