Genesis 9 Export Issues: White Figure in DAZ Viewport, Missing Textures on Export (Maya/Blender)

Hello,

I’m having an issue with Genesis 9 figures in DAZ Studio.  In Daz's viewport, the figure appears white, but it renders fine in the DAZ renderer (Iray).  When I export these figures, only some of the texture maps transfer over, while the rest are missing.

I can find the texture maps in my DAZ Library, but they don’t look like they do in the DAZ render.  It seems like there’s a lot going on with the DAZ shaders (like SSS and Dual Lobe Specular) that don’t translate to simple Diffuse, Normal, or Roughness maps.

Google and Chat GPT says to bake the textures, but I can’t find any way to do this in DAZ.  Is it just not possible yet to transfer Genesis 9 figures (with these complex materials) to other programs like Maya or Blender?

What I’ve Tried:

  • Exporting as FBX and importing into Maya/Blender.

  • Checking texture paths, but missing maps.

  • Manually applying textures, but materials don’t match.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Comments

  • You wil need to rebuild the materials in the destination application, they do not generally transfer well between aplications (or at least, not between render engines).

  • Hey Richard!

Thank you for the response!  Darn, that's disappointing!  I was hoping it would be more straightforward like Genesis 8, where transferring textures over is pretty simple.  Looks like Genesis 9 is on a whole different level with all the shader complexity!  Man, I hope they make a script one day to help streamline this process!

Thanks again for taking the time to explain.

For transfering to blender you can try Diffeo.

    See this https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/689606/diffeomorphic-add-ons-version-5-0-0-released#latest

or ask in the blender thread if questions.

Genesis 9 characters, like later Genesis 8.1 characters, are likely to use the PBR Skin sahder instead of the Iray Uber shader used for most Genesis 8 characters. That may well be the difference, or possibly greater use of Layered Images for things like lips.

    Hey Felis,

Thanks for the suggestion about using the Diffeomorphic Blender add-on!.   I gave it a try, and it sort of works.  I was able to bring the Genesis 9 figure into Blender, and the render in Blender looks exactly like it does in DAZ, which is great.

The problem is the viewport still shows the figure as a flat beige color, just like DAZ’s white viewport, and the shader graphs don’t transfer over to Maya, which is where I do all my work.  I also tried to bake the textures in Blender, but it doesn’t seem to be working properly (I’m not sure if I’m doing it right.)

It looks like, for now, the figure will require rebuilding materials in Maya, or a proper bake workflow that preserves the SSS and layered shader effects.  Still, I appreciate the tip, it’s useful for previewing in Blender at least.

I don't think you can bake it. The problem is that normal file transfer to other systems only support simple materials.

And no idea why your character is white in viewport.

Diffeomorphic addon or DazToBlender bridge can correctly export textures with Iray to Blender... If you want to see textures in Blender, change color type to Texture in Viewport or switch to Shading workspace ~~

I don't use Maya recently but DazToMaya bridge worked for me with DS 4.2x ~~ no issue ever found in terms of exporting textures ~

If you use FBX format, you can Bake textures by using the option of Embed Textures (only supports binary FBX) in FBX Exporter of Daz Studio. The exported FBXs at least work for Blender ~~
