Filament

Can someone please explain what this is for and what it does?  I've been gone for a bit and have no idea what this does.

It's another render engine, which renders in real time. It can be used for preview as a viewport draw style, or for final rendering.

It has its own set of shaders, including the Filatoon shader which can be used to create toon renders easily.

  • With the Filatoon shaders, I've come to appreciate Filament a lot, having an older computer.

Note there are now some store items that include both Iray & Filatoon/Filament presets (a rarity) plus others where the base product is one or the other but has an add-on for the other render engine.

  • Strictly speaking it is a Dawstyle, rather than a full render engine. This will affect how some of the Visible In options work, and to produce an image you need to have the Filament Drawstyle ative and set the Render Engine to Viewport rather than being abole to seelct Filament directly.

Interesting.  Thank you!  So it needs its on textures?  Iray textures won't work?

Not different textures, but the surface properties need tweaking as it's a different shader. Some stuff looks okay off the bat, other stuff looks too bright.

I used easy-filatoon to make this. None of the clothing or figures or backgrounds in this are "made for filatoon". (The maid missed a spot.) And I'm only noticing now the dresser is floating. Dangit!

Oh well, at least re-rendering in Filatoon is quick if you need to change something :)

Thank you!  I appreciate the example.  I am constantly finding that one detail I have to go back and fix lol.

If you have a Mac OS computer, Filatoon only works with DS6 at this time. But it is one of my favorite ways to work creating a scene.

Some of the products on sale now are: https://www.daz3d.com/catalogsearch/result?pp=40&q=filatoon&s=score&p=1&guid=

I actually thought there were more than two pages, so I am not sure what happened when I searched on 'Filatoon' or if this is accurate.

The main flaw people run into with Filament is transparency maps. They're binary. Either on or off. No in between. Also, they don't stack well. Hair that has multiple transmaps look just horrid.

    Re: Transparency maps:

I find they work a lot better with PBR Masked Threshold set to 1 and Ambient set to pure white. The internal shadowing seems to get confused.

It will take far longer to load the DUF that it will take to fix it and rerender it. :)

    Ok, here's an example:

First step, just converted straight and PBR Masking set to 1.

    Then Receive Shadows set Off

    Then Cap hidden.

    Then Cast Shadows set Off

Thanks for sharing this link. I really liked the example renders, But I would prefer to be able to  tone done the Anime look a bit to be more like Marvel or DC comics. Can it?

    Cheers

Probably. I think you would need the right textures (especially if you want to create the "Ben Day Dots" look) and pic the correct line widths. If you look at the sample I posted above, I picked slightly thick lines for the outlines. That's configurable. But my sample isn't using native filatoon textures so it should be possible to get a more Marvel/DC look. Of course, the number of filatoon resources is still rather small. And the fact that there's no easy way to filter the shop (beyond "filatoon" in the search bar) is limiting.

Yeah - but one added by the forum. I'm unsure why but sometimes a space or whatever after a link adds a %C2%A0 to the end of a link, making it unusable:

    https://www.daz3d.com/rssy-3delight-and-iray-to-filament

^That one should work (or the one Richard posted above which definitely works)

For future reference (if another link from the forum doesn't work) - look for that code at the end of the link, delete it, and the link should work.

  • I believe %C2%A0 is the unicode encoding for a non-breaking space. Why whatever you are copying from decided to put a non-breaking space after a URL, I couldn't tell you.

Thanks Richard, once again I am in your debt for assisting a silly old senior likeme.

Just one question if you do not mind, is this one of those scripts which may have issues running with the new Daz Studio?

    Again Thanks kindly...

First part in the product description "The RSSY 3DL and Iray to Filament script"

So you it is a script, but I can't see it can be done in another way.

Why do you have troubles running scripts, do you get an error or what?

No, I have not purchased this script yet.

    But intend to.

However I read somewhere the new DAZ Studio ver 6.xxx  is still being developed and I read somewhere certain scripts may not work.

BUT I maybe wrong, hence the question.

    Sorry about the confusion

  • Some scripts fail to work correctly, or even at all, in DS 2025 while others are fine. This one isn't waving any red flags, so it may be OK or it may not - I don't have it to test.

No problem, Thanks again for setting me straight. :-)

Hopefully some one with this product and the new DAZ Studio 2025 ver 6.xxx will comment.

The real issue with this is we don't know which of the follow is true for every script in the library:

    • The script works fine in Daz6. Great.
    • The script breaks, but the PA updated the product with a fix. Great! But it's unpaid work for the PA, not great.
    • The script breaks, but requires so much work, the PA releases a new product with the same (and hopefully better) functionality. Good, buying it again smarts, but keeping the PA happy is also important.
    • The script breaks and the PA says they have no idea how to fix it. Not good. At least they tried.
    • The script breaks and the PA says nothing. Worst outcome.

It's a lot of work for the PAs who prolifically create script products. None of the above adds in the time dimension. Day 0 fixes are best of course. But even with the lead time, I wouldn't expect every script will be updated with the first GA release of Daz 6.

And none of this discusses plugin development, for which, "It just works" is not a possibility.
