Single object remains hidden when using canvases no matter what i do

Morning folks,

Had a very frustrating bug(?) show up last night that ended up impacting a finished image I had to get out (had to spend a bunch of time in compositing I shouldn't have).

I was trying to render a pass of the scene everything except my backdrop object. Sounds easy enough right?  Problem is the second I start using canvases, the weapon the character is holding is excluded.  No matter what i do, it's excluded.

Tried opening a new scene with just the object and canvas turned on.  Excluded.  Tried flipping the normals just in case there was something bugged in them.  Excluded.  Tried adding a completely different set of stock shaders to it in case there was something unseen in the surface settings.  Excluded.

Infuriatingly enough, at the end of exhausting all my ideas, undos, and redos in this test file, at the VERY end it rendered included, but I have no idea what sequence actually led this this and haven't been able to repeat it.  Honestly I think it's probably an undo/redo in there somewhere, because I've noticed undo/redo when applying shaders can sometimes jack things up but in this case might have unjacked it lol.

Any ideas?  Pics attached full render vs canvas where the node list SHOULD be showing everything except the pink backdrop, but the weapon drops out too.

Is this your own model or a freebie/store item? Anything that looks liike it might be related in the log (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File)? Which version of DS?

It's a model ripped from a game and imported, but so is everything else in the scene (clothing ripped and rigged to g9) and none of the other things have the issue.  There were no errors in the log, nothing of the sort.  I'm on 4.24.  This isn't the first time I have had issues with seemingly random objects not making it to canvas.
(also thinking back I think the "one time" i got it to "canvas render" in a test was because I accidently hit viewport IRay render, which doesn't use canvases)

(2/3) The plot thickens...If I export the weapon as an obj and reimport, it works with canvases.  However this obviously is only a bandaid and not ideal, as I lose all my rigging on the weapon's dangly bits.  Much rather find the source of the bug and fix it.

(3/3 lol) Found the problem.  No idea HOW it got to this point, but it's treating the bugged weapon as an instance...(instances don't work with canvases).  It is very obviously...not an instance though...

Don't really know what to do about that.  Yes I know there's a product that converts instances to objects but I'll be damned if I'm spending 10 bucks for that rather than find the source of the problem so it doesn't happen again.
