Smaller sun that casts decent shadows?

I could have sworn that I did this before, but now I can't get it to work at all. Can someone remind me how, in Studio's Sun/Sky mode, to make the sun smaller (the default 4.000 is gigantic), and still cast realistic hard shadows? If I turn off the proper sun scaling and adjust it to 1.000, the shadows are almost invisible. I tried raising intensity and adjusting every other setting as well, and also tried setting the sun object to a Distant light so that could cast the shadows, but they wouldn't line up. I also can't figure out why the Iray Sky Pro product creates a very visible break where it meets the horizon. Now I get why many experts just put in a background image for the sun and sky and adjust their lighting to match.
Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried raising the Ground Shadow Intensity?
That's a good idea, but I need to use the floor of a scene and not the built-in ground. I may have gotten it under control, there was something wrong with the saved scene that I was using to test it. It kept saying I was missing a product (which I wasn't), then it crashed and I deleted all the lights and started over. Now it seems to be better, although I can't seem to get Iray Sky Pro to look the way I want. I'll just add clouds and sun glare in postwork if necessary. Thanks very much.
