Is black the new BSoD

Is black the new BSoD?  Today, I had two times my screen went black and complained that Windows had an error and it needed to restart.  I didn´t get a chance to get a picture for either event.

How can I figure out why it happened twice after the fact?  Not that I could when it happened either.

On the Start Menu you can type "Event Viewer" to find the event viewer and it will have information on whatever caused the BSOD.

Look for critical error events around the exact time the crash occurred to find clues about the cause of the BSOD, such as driver problems or hardware issues.

    What version of Windows?

What were you doing when this happens?

I am using Windows 11.  First time, I was playing Sims 4 and creating a new family for the game.  Can´t remember what I was doing the second time.

Did the fans spin up on your PC?

Maybe it's a heating up a bit too much and it's overheating when gaming?

Can you do lite things like browsing the web and things like that that don't use much compute power?

Here's a free program to monitor the temps on your GPU and CPU to find out if it's heat related

    https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/hwmonitor_1.59.exe

If you already have one then you can certainly use the one you like.

I just put this one here in the case you didn't already have one.

also...I forgot to ask if you had any mods installed on your game?

Those can cause all kinds of problems.

Not all mod makers are equal so not all mods behave correctly.

Especailly if they are for different versions of the game or need other mods of specific version to function correctly.

No mods for sims 4, but that doesn´t include the 27 EA made addons.

Microsoft did retire the Blue screen of death. Who knows why. Now it's just black.

    a) It is more likely your monitor was put to sleep and you have had a USB bus bug of some sort. You unplug the USB devices, e.g. keyboard & mouse, so that they repond again & then that should wake up your monitor.

    b) You computer is sleeping, single press your power or sleep button to wake it from sleep if you haven't programmed your BIOS to allow the keyboard and/or mouse to wake up the computer from sleep.

I use a Bluetooth mouse now.  The keyboard is still wired.

It was not just a black screen but it had text on it too.  I found a picture on the net of basically what it looked like.  I didn't take a picture of my monitor with that screen.

Is that the same error code you got when your's crashed?

Have a look in the event viewer for critical errors.

If we can find your error code we can start looking for the fix.

Do you have another mouse to try out?

Might be your bluetooth driver needs to be reinstalled if it's just happening with that mouse.

Could also be software that came with the mouse if it has any extra buttons isn't playing nice with windows.

Another mouse to try it out and disabling bluetooth would help eliminate those two things.

I have the Bluetooth mouse that just replaced the dying wired mouse.  That dying mouse barely works.  It turns on then turns off in half a second or less.

is your PSU powerful enough for your GPU?

mine isn't and if I don't undervolt with MSI Afterburner it will blackscreen when I render

I level out my board power draw curve so it never reaches 300W in GPU-Z because that's when it will crash

it will vary depending on how many volts your PSU is, it took me quite a few goes and crashes to find my "sweet spot"

I don't know my PSU voltage and cannot open my tower up easily to look (memory like a sieve cannot recall what it was last time I checked)

Could be that one of the CPU cores is overheating, not all of them, sometimes it's just one of them.

My Ryzen 7 3800xt has a "bad" core that won't clock over 3.9Ghz without overheating and causing the program I'm using to CTD(Crash To Desktop), freeze up the PC or even BSOD the whole thing.

The rest of the cores will easy hit 4.5-4.7GHz so when Windows clocks them all up it causes problems for me.

I use "MSI Center" to set all cores to 3.9Ghz so I don't have to fiddle around in the BIOS and it's much easier to set.

After doing so, all my problems went away.

Not sure if MSI Center would work on Sfariah's computer, but it might be worth a try.

From what I understand it's for MSI motherboards only. Though there might be another desktop app that has the same features.

Of course there's always doing it in the BIOS, but now everyone is comfortable poking around with the settings in there.

I think a black screen is lower in severity than a blue screen but also less common.

According to the image you posted your error is a crash in the HAL (hardware abstruction layer)

If you're used Bluetooth mouse you should unplug the faltering wired mouse and remove the driver. If you have a bluetooth keyboard connect it to and unplug the wired keyboard too.

That still doesn't rule out the USB bus/BIOS USB bug.

But I thought I said that picture was not mine.  I found a picture on the internet that was close to what I remembered.  The screen did not happen when I had a camera of a mobile device easily available.  Both times the screen cleared before I could think of taking the picture of the screen.
