Figure setup tool, can't drag geometry from left pane into right.

Hi,

So I'm trying to use the figure setup tool, I imported an object from Blender with selection sets, and I'm trying to drag it onto the "geometry" in the right-hand pane, but it won't let me. I've done this without a problem before. Any advice?

  • Can you import the OBJ into the scene normally, just as a prop?

Yes. I can try manual setup, but I'd like to use the Figure Setup tool.

  • I was mainly thinking it would go some way to confirming there wasn't a fundamental issue with the OBJ file. Is this a model of your own making, and would you be willing to upload it for others to have a poke at?

  • Well, I tried doing manual set-up, and the bones started going haywire once I assigned the face groups to them. They seemed to switch places, flip around, and so on. So it definitely has to be something with the .obj file. I've attached it in case anyone wants to have a try.

  • I tried in DS 4.24.0.3 and it worked, though there ar some oddities in the grouping (an Off that seems to be the base of the ears and an inner and an outer group that appears to be a few random loking polygons). I haven't tried rigging, but the figure was created OK.(using TriAx since that is the default).

This is what happens when I try it. I had to compress the .mp4 file, since for some reason they won't allow attaching movie files. I must be missing something simple, since this is a cylinder I exported from Daz, after making selection groups, as you can see. Like I said, I've been able to do this before with other .obj files.

(I was able to rig it manually, if badly).

Dragging in Figure Setup works on my side. Only its default vertex groups are wrongly set up.

Fixed it firstly then set it up in Figure Setup, created the figure, filled selection group and converted weight maps, then rigged it to G8F.  Tweaked the weight mapping, bones worked as intended.

Edit: What's your DS version ? with OS Mac or sth. ?

BTW, OBJ file with fixed vertex groups is attached. You can further give it a try.

  • Thanks so much, but no dice. Same problem as before at my end. I can't even get it to work with an .obj file that I was able to rig in this way before, same version and same computer. I've tried it on two different Macs. I must be doing something wrong that's probably simple, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be. I tried exporting the G8 female model as an obj, then re-importing it with figure setup, and had the same problem. I made a screen recording:              https://youtu.be/tgqk3RM1_As

Maybe it's a Mac version issue ... Suggest you fill a support ticket ~

  • I now realize that I can rig in Blender and export to fbx. Which is probably a much better option, given that Blender's rigging tools are more advanced. But it's still annoying.
