Slow 4.24 renders, Scene Traversal

I just updated to 4.24 and my renders got REALLY slow. What happens is something called "Scene Traversal". This occurs every time a render target canvas is written. So, I set my update interval to 600 seconds. It wrote 700 iterations in ten minutes, then slowed down to what, about twenty iterations for ten minutes. Let me head you off at the pass if you are going to offer any of the explanations I've googled so far, to whit:

Don't tell me this isn't new. It wasn't happening in 4.22.
Don't tell me that it was happening in the background and I'm on shrooms as far as render speeds because the only difference is, it tells me in the log file. That just isn't true.
Don't tell me it's normal. It isn't normal. cheeky

    Scene Traversal is indeed not new, it already existed in the version of Iray used in 4.12 years ago (yes, I really mean 4.12). It simply wasn't logged before.

    There could be a lot of reasons why you see a difference in speed between 4.22 and 4.24.
