Major earthquake happened, wave being tracked, pray or whatever you do for those in its path and if you can GET TO HIGHER GROUND NOW.

In danger are the islands between Russia and North America, the western coastline of North America.

............

update: waves have been reaching the coastlines, thankfully not too high. Nuclear facilities allegedly were unharmed.

The wave(s) lose power the further they travel but so far it's not looking good :-(  I have family somewhere over on the western side too, can't reach them so hoping they're far enough inland [reports vary].

...here in Oregon it is expected to reach us in bout 45minm  (currently time is 23:05 here).  We are still under an advisory not a warning and maximum wave height expected to be around 1m or less  Fortunately it is low tide here but still it can generate dangerous so people have been warned to leave beach areas.

While Portland is about 70 miles inland and will not be affected, I do have a few friends currently at the coast both here in Oregon and in Washington State   Fortunately it is late and fairly chilly there so likely they are not outside at this time.

Massive 8.8 earthquake triggers tsunami warnings across Pacific, West Coast

Officials urge evacuations as powerful earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula prompts tsunami alerts for Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, and parts of the West Coast.

Some estimates were for 1 to 3 metres high waves ... and to realize that these are not splashes of water, they can be like miles long and traveling at 500 mph so that's a hard hit. If you're in or near the danger zones please MOVE NOW. There's no more reincarnating into fishes of the seas.

    I'm here.

Between the Olympic Peninsula and Puget Sound, I've got a couple buffers protecting me.

Yes according to some reports, should be fine there. I hope so.

They really should hold off until they have better estimates of actual tsunamis, people are going to start ignoring the warnings as a typical CYA and click bait dynamic.

Well that is on them if they don't take them seriously.  With the gridlock they had in Hawaii, early is better.

Yes remarkably few people were hurt or worse in this. It is rather impossible to accurately judge how much water is coming during the dark of night ;-)

Just heard back from family that they're all okay too :-) Their local concern is to go higher means forest which apparently is still burning in places. Sometimes options in life really sucks.

Oh by the by, from previous tsunamis, it is known that IF one is one the beach when a tsunami is approaching, it's too late. One cannot outrun them. IF one is near the water and notices it pulling back to the ocean, RUN. It pulls back to join the incoming wave.

Thanks Catherine!  I'm not in US but sending reminders to some of my friends in there. I suppose they've already known ~

From a video I've seen showing the spread after some other earthquake (I think it was Japan's one few years ago), those waves can make it from Japan to the US in some 8 hours if I recall correctly, so I don't think there's time to wait for better estimates in this case, because if they do, it's going to be too late to evacuate anyone, especially if it's in the middle of the night.

You're welcome ... pretty sure if I were on the coastline I'd rather have 100 people telling me than nobody bother to mention it.

AFAIK the warnings are now lifted. I didn't post any all clears when those started rolling off because the entire coastline was not cleared at the same time. One section's warning along the US coast actually went red so ... well by now should be just the mess to clean up.

Some of us are old enough to remember the hideous disaster that struck India one winter. Nothing we ever want to see repeated anywhere.

My brother was in Japan in 2011, on a little island out from Tokyo. I'm firmly in camp "more warnings sooner" even if they wind up unnecessary.
