Will FilaToon work on Genesis 8 figures or before?

I'd like to ask, will FilaToon work on Genesis 8 figures or prior versions?  And also, is there a manual that can illustrate how to add the FilaToon renders properly in order for the renders to get great results?

I ask this because, after I learned about the looming demise of 3Delight on future versions of DS, I have an opportunity to learn how to use Oso's Toon shaders and even the FilaToon shaders.

simple answer, yes, *any* filatoon shader can/will work on *any* mesh.

complicated answer. most of the conversion utilities have custom settings/presets/targets for G9, and maybe G8/G3, meaning you may have to manually replicate the settings you like onto your target mesh.

This means that you'll have to study the shaders a bit, and if you like someing on one mesh, you *may* be able to simply copy and paste it to the new mesh (select source surface, copy, select target surface(s), paste). The complication usually arises when a shader is composed of a mix of *image-based* information along with settings parameters (sliders). In these cases, to get the same effect, you'll have to somehow duplicate/convert (match) the image information involved on the one you like (e.g. various elements of a skin shader) onto the one you need (e.g. G9 skin elements -> Genesis 1 skin elements), which can be fairly involved, unless the images involved are simple/consistent, like an even greyscale noise pattern from one shader element that can simply be replicated across the entire target UV image map of the equivalent ...

    Clear as mud?

That said, with many filatoon shaders, there are no images involved, or they can be replaced to pretty good effect with solid colors or simpler image maps (like bump maps, for skin) instead, and possibly generate the effect you want, or sometimes better!

    hope this helps,

You can try to save the Fila toon shader as shader preset. Uncheck any channel that containes figure specific texture maps like the diffuse channel.
Apply this shader to your G8 or earlier figure. The existing texture channels should not be changing, when applying those custom Fila Toon shaders.

Can I recommend you look at 3Diva;s Easy Filatoon?

    https://www.daz3d.com/easy-filatoon

While one or two of the options it has are geared towards Genesis 9, it mostly works with everything and it allows you to test dozens of envionrmental, material and lighting settings in seconds. It's an incredible time-saver and I highly recommend it.

For learning Filatoon, it's invaluable as you can use the many, many library settings to get something close to what you're after and then you can examine what settings it made, and tweak them to get it "just right".
