I solved part of the era search by creating a category in my Wardrobe called 'Type' and using a code to identify by the letter 'C'=Contemporary, 'H'=Historical (1970s on back), 'S'=SciFi, 'A'=Animal, LPi=LowPi or Low Poly. The second character would indicate the usage: 'B' = Business/Work, 'C' = Casual, 'CT' = Child/Teen, 'E' = Ethnic, 'Fa' = Fantasy, 'Fo' = Formal, 'G' = Goth, 'S' = Sports, 'M' = Military/1st Responder, 'R' = Religious, 'Util' = Utilities
I had tried to do something like this with classifying footwear, but too many outfits are being released without them now. I don't have to worry about generations as the auto-conversion menu that pops up is so good that it rarely fails.
I also make copies of each outfit promo and not only file them by generation but together. The historical ones that are together I sort by major eras, close to what is listed here: 4th C on back, 5th to 7th C, 8th to 15th C, 16th to 18C, 19thC, 20thC, 21stC (yes some early 2000s stuff is outdated now.) But I have been considering adjusting the 19th C and 20th C further down because they had so many distinct styles. As I was doing this, I was also researching clothes from around the world to find out when they were first worn and was surprised to find many outfits that are commonly worn today were created before the 4th C. So some are classified as C, H, and S and I think they may continue in one form or another into the future.
I also thought I might do this for my building sets. I have broken them out beyond Complete, Exterior, and Interior, but there are times I need Medieval European not all of European. I haven't decided still mulling this.
You could also use tags, which would allow you to assign more than one to any item (well, you can have items in multiple categories too - but it is harder to do "AND").
Richard, I am not sure if it is how my brain works (I had a serious head injury when I was a year and a half) but I just never caught onto 'Tags', along with some other things. But my Type category works for me. Maybe not for anyone else but I thought I would put it out there for others to think about.
For those things I can't figure out, I keep trying but it is like hearing a sentence and then there is a black hole part way through an explanation, then the sound picks up again without context. And I am lost. Barbult and Novica has often been able to break through to help me. SloshWerks did too. I appreciate that.

It wasn't meant to be fault-finding, or even saying tags are better - just pointing out another tool that could be used.
I didn't take it that way. Just explained why I never considered it. I am glad you offer the option to others.
What a great idea! Thanks for that, tsroemi! I've only just discovered the thread and have yet to read through the entries, but your categorisation of the individual eras is already good.
You're very welcome, I plan to do another round of additions these days, probably on the weekend. Glad to know it's proving useful!
Ooh bookmarked this! Thanks for sharing your categorized finds.
It really is so hard finding things in our libraries. I really need to start adding and using tags myself, but I have no idea when that will happen...
Glad it's coming in handy for folks already, it sure is for me, too! I'm writing everything into a doc file first, so as not to have cloud flares ruining everything when I'm adding to the sections. It's actually a very nice, meditative thing to do in the evening, listening to audiobooks or music and just wading slooooowly through my library. Unfortunately I have to admit that I added some more stuff already during this sale ....
Ah well, at least that great 90s clothes collection by Dogz is finally mine! And will surely make its way onto this list soon.
Worked through and included another batch today, up to page 40 in my library. Can't believe how little medieval and Renaissance there is so far, but I know I do have some of these deeper down inside my library. The going through the library pages is very tedious because one has to actually click the arrow dozens of times to skip forward, there seems to be no way to just jump to a certain page number. It's merely tiring now, but I wonder how I will feel about it once I get into the 100s ...
I'v done a tiny spot of updating to catch up with my recent purchases, two outfits in Victorian/Edwardian and two in early 20th. Right now, I've also started saving each product pic from my library to keep in one place all together, because my screenshots of the actual promo pages are all over my devices. This will surely take some time ... But when I started, I also wondered whether I should do a second thread on period-style hair?
Edit: Just realized that I do already have the product pics of everything I ever downloaded here in the files of DIM, albeit very small versions. These should be enough though to make a basic list of what I've got.
I think Gothic seems to be different on the western side of the atlantic ocean sometimes. Often it seems to mean "tattoos and a depressed look on your face" while hereabouts it's more old clothes, lace, lots of black and small crossovers into Steampunk. The yearly Leipzig Wave Gotik Meet could be an example, as least the pictures from there (example: 2014) make me think so.
