GIMP/DazStudio Colour Picking Issues

Hello! I have an image I want to copy the colour of to put as the Base Colour in the Surfaces tab in DazStudio. I've been TRYING to use GIMP 3.0.2 to select the colour from an image. I used to be able to use either the RGB values, or the HSV values and put them into Daz directly and have the right colour.  For some reason the colour values in DazStudio NO LONGER correspond with what I see in GIMP.

For example: I have a dark indigo blue colour on GIMP. When imputting into DazStudio, it would show up as a green. Nothing I tried seemed to help. I didn't have this issue with an earlier version of Gimp, so I am moving back to an older version to see if that helps.

Moving back to an older version of GIMP did NOT help. Now entering the HSV numbers gets me a red, which leads me to believe DazStudio must have changed how it handles colours?

What the heck is happening?

Are you talking about the color of your image in Base Color in DS, or the color that comes out of the render?

Sorry I thought I had made sense; I sometimes don't. I hope my next explanation is a lot clearer.

I mean the Base Colour, the box next to the image, if you're using images.

Basically, I'm kitbashing, so none of the Textures match colour-wise. Usually I would fix that by modifying the Texture in GIMP, but in this instance I wanted to see if I could achieve the same result by changing the Base Colour instead.

Normally I select the colour I want to use from a Texture by opening the Texture in GIMP and using the Colour Picker tool. When I click on the colour swatch showing what Foreground Colour we're painting with, it shows me it's numbers  the RGB/HSV values (0-255). When I have those, I will open the Select Colour dialogue in Dazstudio and punch those numbers into their corresponding boxes. This would give me the Base Colour I wanted next to the Texture image (if any) effectively tinting the surface.

Recently, those numbers (RGB/HSV) are not matching their displayed colours. For example; what looks a nice indigo blue in the Colour Picker preview in GIMP, turns a khaki green when entered into Dazstudio's Select Colour preview.

I was able to modify a Texture in GIMP using the indigo colour I'd picked from a different Texture. When this modded Texture was applied, it turned out the right colour in Dazstudio.

I just want to know if there's a change in the way Dazstudio handles colour information? Is there a way to make GIMP and Dazstudio communicate colour selections better? Or is there a free painting app that would allow me to select colours via a colour picking tool so that I can use those numbers to recreate that colour in Dazstudio's Select Colour dialogue without the issues I've described above?

Could you show an image with the corresponding values ref GIMP and ref Daz Studio?

    Can do!

    1. The first image is a texture preview of the colour inside Daz Studio.

    2. The second shows the colour selection in GIMP, with the RGB values highlighted.

    3. The third is what happens when I input those RGB values into Daz Studio.

    4. The fourth image shows what happens when I only enter the Hue (the first HSV value). Strangely, Daz Studio then displays a colour that looks visually close to what I saw in GIMP.

    5. The last image shows what happens when I enter all the HSV values, again, not quite right.

I’m thinking a possible workaround might be to enter the RGB values and then manually set the Hue. It’s not perfect, but it might get me visually closer to the intended colour in the future.

    But, what is happening?

There's no change that DS handles colors as well as color values ~~ The RGB value of the indigo color you picked in the 2nd screenshot is 33,39,72,  but you entered 33,79,32 in the 3rd screenshot which is surely a dark green.

And actually you don't have to use GIMP to pick a color. You can directly do it in Daz Studio, like what is shown in the attached screenshot.

Wow, I've been using (various versions of) Daz Studio for 15 years now and had no idea you could do that! Thanks for bringing it to my attention blush

I had no idea either! Thanks a ton! Saves a lot of time! Thank you!

Also, would you believe I did NOT notice I'd typed it wrong?... I have a weird issue with numbers.

well I learned something new and I thought I knew all the surface tab tricks

like drag and dropping images in from explorer, using CTRL to bring up different colour wheels and charts etc
