material to geometry

can normal maps or height maps  be converted yo geometries in Hex2?  Basically, i want to apply a texture map to an object and make that texture affect the model as a geometry so it can be 3d printed (such as  brickwork on a wall).

No. There are tools that will (attempt) to do this but Hexagon is not one of them, at least as far as I am aware.

  • You can do this in Blender using geometry displacement.  It will require a large number of polygons; then, make sure to apply the displacement modifier before exporting the model.

I cant use Blender - it causes the dreaded blue screen of death  when i try to add mats or textures

Might be worth giving 3DCoat a try.

    From their page:

Normal Map to Mesh: The PPP scene with the normalmap can be converted into a true sculpt geometry using the Painting room.

    you can in Carrara

checking displace in 3D view and exporting an obj with morphs and skinning checked

it is a dense triangulated mesh but keeps the UV mapping of the original
