Daz Keeps Freezing when I try to render a specific scene and I have NO idea why.
Hello gang, happy Saturday. How are you doing this morning?
Me? I could be doing better.
I need to make renders, and I keep finding issues with this one particular scene.
Before we get started, I want to share some context:
My NVIDIA card is an RTX 2070 Super.
Driver : 576.80 Studio.
Daz Ver : daz studio 4.22.0.16
Plugins that I use now and have NOT had issues with: Diffeomorphic, send to zbrush, batch render
At first, I kept running out of Virtual Memory, so I used Scene Optimizer and cut the textures down BIG time.
I thought this solved my problem.
But then something "funny" happened, and by "funny" I mean Daz decided to keep freezing up.
At first it was happening as soon as 10-20 iterations in.
So, I checked the Shaders of a certain Collar item and changed them to iray base manually.
I thought I was in the clear.
Then about 849 iterations in, this happens as my Log file says.

This is the point where my computer froze, as the next line in the log file is :
2025-06-28 10:57:32.220 +++++++++++++++ DAZ Studio 4.22.0.16 starting +++++++++++++++++I tried re-installing my studio drivers via the NVIDIA app, and installed a stable version.
Still the same issue.
At first , I thought the prorblem was Miki3dX's collar item. So, I removed it and then added a smaller collar. It worked and I stoped the render at about 750 iterations, but I wanted a bigger choker.
So, I used Pretty Little Thing's Choker and added a black shader to go with the characters leather suit.
It started freezing again.
I AM currently using Dforce hair, but I am wondering if that could be the problem.
The scene I am making is VERY similar to another scene down to the environment, lightning and assets, the only difference being a character wearing a catsuit with Dforce hair and a choker item with lots of shaders.
If anyone has any ideas, it would be a big help to me.

Comments
just a few ideas:
- turn off shadows for the hair(s)
- render in layers, compile in image editor
- remove anything from the entire scene that is not involved in the actual render
- To clear cache first, save scene and close D/S. Open D/S, load scene and render.
- if the scene does not have a ground/floor, then in render settings turn off ground [so it doesn't try calculating for ground shadows, seems to help over here]
- sometimes the mesh needs checking, not likely for these items however some modellers leave WAY too much interior mesh inside their models [serves absolutely no good purpose] [adds to the light calculations big time for all the bouncing]
- hide any unseen body parts [again to reduce unnecessary light calculations]
- remove any 'normals' from models in the distance, nobody is going to see pores at 20 feet for eg.
Wait, I can turn off shadows for the hairs?
Wait, Daz is doing ALL of those Light calculations???
I'm gonna do the layering as a last resort. I suspect the Culprit is this soft long Dforce hair, I looked at it and it has no less than three shells on it.
Problem is, I can't find any other hair that matches the look I am going for. X.x;

2 Tests -
[Finished Test]
1. Classic Long Sleek Hair for Genesis 8 female / Genesis 8.1 female was the culprit. So I made it invisible in one shot and then spot rendered like you so brilliantly suggested.
[Pending Test]
2. Making body parts that I cannot see invisible, including the ones underneath this Latex bodysuit my other character is wearing.
[Update]
2 Tests Complete.
[Finished Tests]
1. Classic Long Sleek Hair for Genesis 8 Female / Genesis 8.1 Female was the culprit but it was a piece of the puzzle. Making it invisible with one shot and then spot rendering with it available is one option.
2. Making body parts that cannot be seen underneath clothes invisible made it so I did not have to spot render anymore.
Conclusion : Hair that has many shells as well as dforce takes up a lot of resources and forces much light calculation with its intensely detailed mesh. This causes freezing mid render when making scenes.
Options available to you who is reading this
1. Make parts of the body hidden under bodysuits / shells / clothing invisible to reduce light calculation
2. Make intense hair invisible and spot render with the hair in the next shot.
Glad you found the reason and that it wasn't the hardware etc!
{fyi for those new to spot rendering for fixes, spot render to a new window {option on tool tab} {be very careful not to change the camera angle, etc} so then the spot render will line up perfectly with the full render in your image editor}
Thanks for everything, Catherine3678ab, I could NOT have done it without you!
You're a genius!
You're quite welcome, glad I could help.
