New Computer

I recently ended up getting a new computer because my old one kept having issues, and it would take up to 10 minutes for a G8 character to load. With the new one, it loads in a fraction of the time and quck spot rendering is a lot faster.  My question is because of my old computer's limitations, I have been afraid to try anything resource intense.  What would be the first thing people would recommend learning? I am thinking rendering, so I can play with the lights and cameras, and settings?

Learning rendering sounds good to me.

How much VRAM (video RAM) do you have?

  • would need to check the specs on VRAM, but the compter was designed for gaming

  • If I am reading this right, VRAM is 128MB

128MB of graphics card VRAM is highly unlikely. That may be your system RAM or something else.

  • 64MB is the actual RAM. This is the only thing I could really find.

If your GPU is an Intel integrated GPU it won't be used at all for Iray rendering, the CPU will be used. It will take much longer to render than with a recent nvidia GPU, but that should work if you have a decent CPU and enough system RAM.

That would be GB not MB anyway, these days.

Well, he said MB, but yeah, system RAM would be GB. My first computer had 8192 BYTES! How far we have come!!
  • MB for the card, I am assuming, 64GB for the actual RAM

Which graphic card do you have?

  •  integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 graphics card

Odd that it has integrated GPU if sold as gaming pc.

Anyway, if you do not have an NVidia GPU, you will only be able to render using the CPU. And that will be a lot slower, just so you are aware of it.

I newer integrated Intel GPUs are considered "gaming" GPUs although picky gamers would say "no way1"

  • Any recommendations for a good video card that wont break the bank?

For Iray rendering you will need a recent Nvidia GPU, with at least 8GB VRAM.

RTX 3600 (with 12GB VRAM), or RTX 4060 Ti (with 16GB VRAM) are usually suggested as "not that expensive" options.

  • Would this be considered a good graphic card: Radeon RX 7600 XT Gaming OC 16G Graphics Card, 3X WINDFORCE Fans 16GB 128-bit GDDR6, GV-R76XTGAMING OC-16GD Video Card.

Graphics Coprocessor AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT
    Brand GIGABYTE
    Graphics Ram Size 16 GB
    GPU Clock Speed 2539 MHz
Video Output Interface DisplayPort x2, HDMI x2

Unfortunately AMD GPU's cannot render Iray.

For that you need an NVidia card.

  • Okay, TY!! Want to make sure I get the right card
