Rigging problem -- bones reset to wrong position

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with a rigging problem. This is one of my first attempts at rigging so I'm probably making a basic mistake.
I have a suitcase which I made. It consists of the case, the lid, the handle. There are a couple of additional parts but they are not important for the moment.
I converted to Prop into a figure, and the root Bone is 100% weightmapped as the Case face group. This is set to YXZ since all moving parts will be rotation of the X axis. This bone is located in the centre of the suitcase and points up.
I created a child bone, and this is 100% weightmapped to the Lid face group. This is also set to YXZ and I have moved the origin and the end point so that the origin is at the hinge point between the case and the lid, and the end point is on the outer edge of the lid. When I created this bone it appeared at the end of the root bone and also pointed up. I wouled expect this since it is a child of the root bone.
All seems to work ok and changing the X rotation of the Lid correcty opens and closes the lid of the suitcase.
The problem arises when I try to add an new property slider to the case , and do an ERC freeze. After the ERC freeze the bones revert to the positions and orientations they were in when the were created, so the Lid bone is now back on top of the Case bone and has move the end of the root bone, above the middle of the Case. This wrecks the rigging.
Not sure if I'm missing a step, or doing things in the wrong order? It's like i need to do something ?? once I've put the bones into what should be their 'zero' position and rotation.

What are you doing ERC freeze on?
Have you memorized the rigging?
Hi, thanks for the quick response.
Ah I haven't memorized the rigging, I expect that is what I missed out. Is there a simple way to describe how to do that?
The suitcase is one of those aluminium type, where the hinge is suplemented by a couple of levers which form a sort of cantilever, and also which prevent the lid opening to far. I'm trying to use ERC freeze to set the rotation of the canilever parts, so that they rotate in sympathy with the main hinge, so that it looks like the levers are connected together, even though in reality one lever has it's end point on the case, and the other lever has its end point on the lid.
.
For memorize, go to Joint Editor, right click in viewport Memorize > Memorize figure rigging.
Thanks, I'll give that a try
That seems to have done the trick. Thank you very much for your help.
