Do these work without having to use the lux renderer?

A very quick, out of the box set up and render in 3delight  (and with low quality settings), so yes, it can be used without luxrender smiley

(Darn, image attach isn't functioning as expected, again.....)

    test

    your welcome smiley

In 3delight, I do prefer to add an UE2 light or - even better - AoA's advanced ambient light for the, well, ambient lighting.

(That;'s the advantage of luxrender when used in a closed environment, no ambient light necessary...)

    Tthanks for the tip.

Theoretically, could I light a whole room with these, not needing a fill or ambient light? I assume they are raytrace lig hts?

  • Just my two cents.

In theory, sure, you could easily light an entire scene using nothing but these.

In reality(not the lux bridge), it'll depend on the look you are going for.

It's rare that you don't need some kind of additional, "cheat", light.

Usually it's just to bring out some detail that the base lights miss, or you want to draw attention to.

Well, the light source in each lamp is an area (or mesh-) light, using the uberarea lightsetting that is included with DS. As such they are 'shaped' raytracing lights, giving for instance softer shadowing and - as applied in these lamps - the possibility for realistic light fall off. However, as with the 'normal' 3delight lights, there is no 'bounce'...

With a alot of lights there might be sufficient lighting to get the effect you want. But as with the normal lights, there is no real ambient lighting . If you want that effect without additional lights it is either using luxrender or the iray versions of the lights ( but of course, those are not in  Fastgrab cheeky )

It's been more then 2 years since I've last done some testing for these lights, so I don't recall how well they work with DS' indirect lighting, Personally not very fond of that in 3delight as it takes a loooong time....

BTW, the lamps do come with quite a few presets for intensity (like 25w light bulb, or 100w lightbulb) and light quality in rendering (the number of samples for the uberarea settings) so even if you have no experience with uberarea lighting, this set is stil very usable as you can just pick a preset.

(and no, I'm not paid by the vendor wink , I just liked to used area lights over the 'normal lights - until luxus and Iray came along that is....... cheeky
