Genesis 3 - Bad Decision by Daz on Materials
in The Commons
Surfaces - Skin - Surfaces
Look down list - arms, blah blah blah - where the hell is nipples?
So you alter the colour of the skin, maybe very pale, the nipples are now the wrong colour, maybe even disappeared, and without post work, they can't be altered.
Surely that is a dumb decision?

Alter them on the actual texture in an image editor, I do it all the time since i like a very specific look. It would look odd if you altered the torso and then left the nipple area the same like it was on V4
Yes, but for me, to be able to alter it within Daz is generally more convenient.
But it created a sharp line of demarcation whereas using an image editor or build a LIE preset (or presets) looks more natural.
I don't get it, other than it's kinda nice to have the separate zone.
You alter the skin tone, the nipple changes to match. Normally, I'd think you want that. If you have a big change & don't change the nipple zone shader on a previous gen figure to match, you get the sharp line of demarcation as you said.
While I don't do G3, this seems fine to me for the reasons indicated. Unless you are doing a cartoon you end up just using the same torso map anyway.
But you know what would be cool, thinking about it? If some material zones 'overlapped.'
Imagine if, say, nipples, lips, and fingernails were defined as overlapping zones, with an alpha channel to define the transition between the upper material and the base torso/face/limb texture.
That way, it'd make (some) sense to define and texture nipples apart from the torso. And hey, it'd be easy to go 'no nipples' simply by setting the alpha to 0 -- just torso.
Overlapping zones makes it a nightmare to work with in the 3d painting programs if they will load at all.
Well, it is not only the surfaces but also the mesh design but slowly but surely I get used to it (after a long time) even I have to fix as much as I have to fix on V4 (maybe more than on V4) so one thing one member of the community has written that the new Genesis figures and especially Genesis 3 Female do not need much fixings and stuff is totally not true, it needs more until you have a good looking character especially if you try to create one by yourself and that belongs to the mesh design (low poly, subD and smoothing) as for the surface (SSS what I really hate and not use). And because I do not use SSS and because I like a more individual look of my characters I have to edit all my skin textures so my tip, get yourself a good graphic programm and edit the textures for your needs, that is the only way to fix things.
