Tutorials for the four sample scenes?

SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,773

I just discovered the four sample scenes in Scenes/DAZ Originals/Tutorial Starter Scenes, and am wondering if there are any tutorials that walk a new user through making these. I can't seem to find them, and I'm just curious because these finished scenes seem much better than the ones that I remember seeing when Studio first added them. Thanks.

I remember that when I started out with DAZ that I was guided through the scenes, but that was in 2014, things changed since I guess and I don't even know what is in todays starter scenes laugh

IIRC they are part of Scene Builder, so you should find "tours"/"interactive" lessons in DIM, never downloaded them so have no idea what they do, your's are probably like mine and "hidden".

Weren't there "Tutorials" at the bottom of one of the default panes in DS... Just a set of numbers that linked to videos/walk-throughs? (If they are still in DS4.23, then do those use those "Scene Builders"?)

There are Interactive Lessons, available at bottom-right (if the status bar is on, anyway) of the main UI and top-left of the Help>Home dialogue. There are also links to the videos in the Home Dialogue, at bottom--left. Sceen Builder can also be opened from there (right at the top)

Which scenes are these?  Are they different ones for each version of DS as they are released?

There have been changes, but not - at least obviosuly - with each release.

"Tutorials Sample Scene 03" (last modified: 2024-09-25T14:42) is a nightmare. The thumbnail shows clearly a man with a beard, but the the file wants one of the ladies. Since I've deleted as much as possible of the forced female part in G9, her .dsf wasn't any longer in the data system. Changed it manually, no prob. Somehow the file also leads to diverse female and masculine textures. Replaced feminine with masculine, also no prob.

But then a half dozen more errors followed because the .duf file leads to non-existent file names with an SLW instead of SSS. Only one file in another folder has one that's actually named Skin_SLW.jpg in:\Runtime\Textures\DAZ\Characters\Genesis9\Base. I'm surprised that someone here was able to use them nevertheless.

Because after my fifth correction, DAZ Studio closed with that double id error or whatever.

I had a long 3d break, gave up on Poser years ago, now trying to learn DS but it could be easier, a folder named "lights" and one named "light presets"? a folder named "Scene builder" and one named "scenes" - both include either "starter" or "tutorial" files! It's stupid enough DS has built these damn vanity "DAZ originals" folders with images, pure spam, one tick more for nothing.

But enough... I just wanted to know if that file from 2024 was ever updated because just skipping the part when it loaded didn't work out so well, it either stuck/freezed or DAZconnect tried to load something. On DS 4.24.03, 8GB VRAM and 64GB RAM.

Meanwhile... I followed the error message in the logfile and assumed that a number in the "id" for the image may have been wrong. I got the idea from page 1 of the "duplicate ID"-thread. Now I've just rendered the tutorial scene. I can't tell you how exited I am: it's the best render I've ever had with DS!!! Despite the problems I mentioned... thanks to the people who created the scene, it's an inspiration to finally learn DS!

It's never a great idea to try and delete parts of a figure only if you don't plan on using them. I never use the genitals on any figure, but I'll just leave those morphs where they lie.   :)

Glad you got it figured out though, that tutoral render is impressive! It's one of the very few times I've seen an HDRI with a proper floor that really looks like it is a mesh object. The first tutorial goes wild with the ground fog too, which is something I haven't really experimented with that much.

    (p. s:  and yes, vanity and similarly named folders drive me nuts too. Can't even tell you how many "pose", "environment", and "Genesis 8 Female" misnamed folders I have.)

They are good tutorils. It is the first thing I did in 2016 when I started buying 3D models again.

Understood. :-) But it was a mix of self-created errors (missing morphs) and wrong texture paths. However it's the first time I corrected a .duf file and the log.txt file in \AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4 is really precise.

The tutorial scenes for G9 are so much better than what I recall with the surfer dude (Genesis 2), if I had something like the lights for G9 in G2 I would have tried DS much earlier, it was unnerving to convert everything into Poser after DSON support stopped, a main reason why I lost interest back then.

Now, if anyone of you have a tip where I can learn how to use materials in DS? I'm looking for creating my own materials, as metals, glass, wood and other surfaces.

If you mean "shaders" (and/or shader presets), then there's a fair few topics on these forums that delve into what seems a very complex thing to learn - this is prob a good start: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/356156/how-to-make-my-own-shaders
