Input a serial number?

I just did a fresh re-image, and I'm doing fresh install of 4.8, and as I open it, it asks for a serial number.

i don't recall doing this in the past, but it's been a long time since i did a fresh install.  Has it always been this way?

Yes, it has, to unlock the Pro features you need to enter the serial number.
