Layered Material not showing
Hi there!
I have been trying to follow this apparently simple tutorial:
to add more eyes to a fantasy creature. I have my Genesis 9 figure doing fine, and then I add the single eyes attachment as shown in the tutorial. But once I try to apply their corresponding materials (G9 sclera and G9 Iris) the material doesn't show up and I can't see any change. I followed the tutorial instructions but I think I must be missing something really basic. When applying the material I select the exact eye I want the material on in the scene, and double click the material. Nothing apparently changes in the viewport nor in the render. But also I don't see anything changing in the surfaces panel, so I'm stick with the bare 3d model. Any suggestions on how to fix the issue?
Thx so much

Are you using Iray preview?
Yes! I'm using it, but also try rendering it and I just get the same bare 3d model
Are the materials you ar etrying to use Hierarchical preset (H. Mateials at top-right of the thumbnail if you have the content type tags from metadata)? Have you checked the end of the log after applying the materials (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log File)?
Hi, I checked and it's not an hierarcal material, it says just layered, but I checked the log file and found the error:
2025-04-16 17:01:03.956 [DEBUG] :: Skipping Eye Left because not PBRSkin
so, I guess the problem is the missing PBR skin, which makes sense, but it should be a default material in genesis 9, how can I fix it?
In the mean time thanks for your help, identifying the problem is already a useful step
There should be a preset to apply PBRSkin, which you can use after selecting the object and surfaces but before applying the eye material you want to use. It is called Daz Iray PBRSkin and is found in the Shaders>Iray category or in Shader Presets/Iray/Daz PBRSkin/ in the Content Library under Daz Studio Formats.
Hi, sorry but I'm using DAZ just in my free time and I haven't had much lately, so I'm back to the matter just now. I found the Daz Iray PBRSkin you indicated (thanks for being so clear), and I applied (double clicked right?) before applying the layered material, but I still can't see it. From the log file, it seems the daz iray pbrskin is applying correctly, I still get the [Debug] line saying skipping eye left because no PBRSkin.
I'm not really getting how this materials work honestly, and if it's normal for it to be so tricky, or there is something faulty in my files...
Did you have the eyes and eye surfaces selected when you applied the PBRSkin shader? Shader presets apply to the selected surfaces on the selected object.
The eyes surfaces! no, I didn't selected the surfaces itself, just the object from the outline list! Ok, now I see that something is happening, I apply my PBRSkin with the surface selected, and it kinda lights up, or gets really bright, and when I then apply the Sclera Layered material (Still with the surface selected) I get no longer the error about the missing PBRSkin, but I still don't see changes applying the layered material. Something is definetely better, but I'm still missing a last step I guess
