Why does the viewport go black when I turn on a light?

Hello.
For a few weeks now, when you add a light, of any type, the viewport goes completely black.
This happens in texture shades mode. Obviously, it doesn't happen in wire, Iray, or filament modes.
In the render editor, I have dome and scene mode selected.

Do you know what I have set up wrong?

Thanks for reading.

  • Try going to Window>Preview Lights (or Ctrl+L) That should put light in place.

As for why, by default (you can turn it off in the Editor tab of Render Settings, in the general group) there is a Headlamp that shines from just by the viewpoint as long as there are no actual light nodes in the scene (environment maps and emissive surfaces are ignored). So adding a light switches it off, leaving only the new light. Turning off Window>Preview Lights tells the Viewport not to try to show how the active lighting works, instead using a light very like the headlamp - except that it doesn't render.
