WEBBOIDS as 3D mesh characters are ©2025 by Walt Sterdan. Webboids as fictional story characters are ©2002 by Walt Sterdan

The character mesh has been crafted by Steve Corder (3D Universe) as a commissioned work for Walt Sterdan. For information on commissioning work from 3D Universe go to:

    https://www.3duniverse.co.za/commissions

To keep things simple (which will no doubt come back to bite me) here's the rules for using the Webboids.

The simplest rule to remember: Webboids must be free.

In short: the Webboids package – mesh, textures, code, etc. – cannot be resold in any way, shape or form.

    In more detail:

    1. You may use the Webboid characters in 2D renders and animations free of charge for both commercial and non-commercial works.

    2. You may use the Webboid characters for 3D printing or 3D interactive games – for free or commercial product – free of charge.

    3. You may share the Webboid characters for free on a one-to-one basis as long as you include the complete, original package which includes this license.

    4. After June 22, 2025 (The Webboid Official Release Day) you may post the complete Webboid package on your website for distribution with some restrictions. You may not charge for the download of the Webboid package or for any part therein; the Webboid package must appear on a page dedicated to the download of the Webboid package and any other Webboid assets you wish to provide for download; Webboid assets being provided (hair, props, clothing, morphs, etc.) for commercial sale must link from the dedicated Webboid page to your store or an order page for checkout, to keep those transactions separate from the free Webboid package and free asset downloads.

    5. You may not charge for the Webboids package, in part or whole, via the internet or as part of any commercial package in any form. Webboids must be free.

    6. You may create add-ons (hair, clothing, props) for the Webboids and distribute your works for free or commercially, as long as the Webboids package isn't included as part of a commercial product or collection. Webboids must be free.

    7. You may make derivative works of the Webboids for personal use and projects only and those derived works can not be shared other than as 2D and 3D prints or in animations. If used in 3D interactive games, please try to ensure that your derivative works cannot be extracted.

    8. You can make morphs for the Webboids and charge for the morphs, as long as the morphs are a separate product that the end user would need to add to their own copy of the Webboids. In short, no adding morphs to your copy of the Webboids and selling it, you can only sell the morph itself. Webboids must be free.

Point 2 specifies 3D interactive games. Which would exclude 3D interactive experiences like a populated walkthrough environment for a VR program. Entirely your call, just wondering if you intend it that way.

Point 7 is now much clearer, though the "please try to..." part probably wouldn't hold up in court as a requirement. I'm not sure what Daz's interactive license says in regard to use in 3D games, but might be worth looking up their terms and conditions to get an idea for phrasing (though you can't copy directly as those would be copyrighted).

Thanks again for your feedback. I think I've finalized the licence using your earlier comments (very helpful) and updated and tweaked a few others. I'm okay with both 3D interactive games and  3D interactiive experiences (and I'm sure if there's not already some we haven't thought of, there probably will be next year); same goes for the "please try to..." as it's not something I'm actually worried about enforcing but thought I should at least suggest it. I think your comment about the end user making a minor tweak and so on pretty much hit the nail on the head about the problem with my earlier version. This way, they can make derivitive versions of the Webboids but can't share them except through 3D interactive games or experiences.

Here's the final version of the license (someone else suggested point 9 regarding my liabilities, something I would never have considered):

It's very kind of you to give these characters away to the community! Thank you! :D

I hope they will find some good homes and people get some fun use out of them!

Thanks, I hope so too. The community's been pretty kind to me over the last couple of decades, so it's just a little bit of payback.

Thank-you ! Works in Carrara after converting to Blended Weight in DAZ Studio.

Clothing from Toon Generations needs exploring to come up with best method for Carrara, as the Realistic morph with the clothing Auto-fit was having issues a couple of ways that I tried.

Wow, that's fantastic! Thanks for sharing this. So cool.

In a pinch, you might try using the normal toon body morphs (buff, hero, etc.) and only apply "semi-realistic" to the head.

All of the head morphs with "semi-realistic" in the name require some amount of semi-realilstic to be dialed in, even if it's only one or two percent.

Thank you. Not sure yet how I would use them but I downloaded them for when I get my render machine back online. I too have worked with 3D Universe for the past five years and commissioned him multiple times. Steve is that  'dark horse' that blows your mind with his humble superhero significance. Can't say enough good things about him. But back to you . . . this is the best example of pay it forward that I have ever seen. Canadians just have that in their DNA. And I suspect someone like you must have a super amazing incredible story to tell the world. There is lots to love about California, but in California you seldom see such selflessness. Glad I lived in Canada for the first 43 years of my life. And, thank you for not only this, but those NPR tips I hungrily searched the forums to find a few years ago.

You're very welcome, and I think I can safely say we're on the same page regarding 3D Universe/Steve, I can't say enough good things about him either.

Thanks very much for the kind words. My main drive to give the Webboids away is simply that the thought of them sitting doing nothing in the dark recesses of my hard drive seemed a little sad, and if even one or two people can have just an hour or two of fun with them each, then that's a few more hours of fun let loose in the world.

Great stuff, what a fun bit of stuff to wake up to! Thanks for testing the Webboids out in Carrara, much appreciated.

Now that I have a couple of older iMacs running as remotes in the basement, I should be able to install Carrara Pro again and give this a try myself once I've cleared my desk of a couple of other projects.
