Why we need macOS & Linux in Studio

Windows forcibly updated my Nvidia drivers last night. Now by dual RTX 5000 Ada cards are not seen.

I use this machine only for Daz Studio; there's a nice MacBook Pro sitting next to it that does everything else, including this forum post. It runs Windows only because that's the only way I can get Iray renders. I really really wish Daz would either move to a render engine they can support on macOS or support Linux. I'm very tired to Microsoft thinking they own my computer.

You should be able to roll back, I can't recall the steps but my nVidia drivers get updated only when I update them.

My 2017 Win 10 laptop accepted an Nvidia driver update that blacked out the screens and then I could not access anything.

After freaking out, I Googled how to roll them back. If you can see your screen and the Nvidia panel, you can use that. I had to boot into safe mode and then get into the system.

  • The rollback option was grayed out. I had to contact the vendor (I bought the system pre-configured) to find the proper version of the Nvidia drivers to install. The bigger problem, IMO, is that this update was installed without my consent. Microsoft has adopted the attitude that if your PC doesn't belong to your employer, who can use enterprise tools to control these things via GPO, then it belongs to Microsoft to do with as they please. It should not be under the actual owner's control.

Is there a technical reason Daz cannot use an open source render engine instead of Iray? Cycles (https://www.cycles-renderer.org/) comes to mind. I realize that would require some not-insignifcant work on Studio, but I'm pretty sure the Iray Ubershader inputs could be fed into a Cycles shader for near-identical results, given how often I do just that in order to render in Blender.

Daz provides a free bridge plugin to send content to Blender/Cycles so no need to have Cycles inside Daz studio.

I've never updated Windows 10 after I did the initial install many years ago. I'm still running version 1909. There's a real easy way to stop Windows updates. You simply set your internet connection to a "metered connection". You will still get periodic notifications of updates being available, but they will never actually get installed unless you do so manually. When you get the notification you can then simply go to Windows Update Settings and you pause updates again for another 4 weeks so you don't get bothered. Rinse and repeat. I've been doing this for years. This is pretty much the first thing anyone new to Windows needs to learn in order to make their lives easier.

Every time I've tried to use it, shaders have ended up as an ugly mess until I manually corrected them. If your experience is different, I wonder what I'm doing wrong?

Blender would be great, but it doesn't work for me. I just can't deal with its UI, I can't get none of the availeble bridges to work and it is slow.
I am caught with with DS.
    EDIT:
Besides, the main point is Windows. I also would really like to dump Windows now, but Linux is not a alternative yet as long DAZ studio and Iray won't run easily on it.

A time will come, to throw all this computer cr*p out of the window and go back to pen and paper.

It did, but it's just me.

I have a lot of experience working with engineering 3D packages for work and home use, going back to 1987. And Blender seems to have been programmed to ensure that zero prior knowledge is useful. I have managed, with help, to finish one function in 31 hours of work inside it - and now have erased it from my system. I would suggest that Blender is far from a panecea to rendering problems in DS. Regards, Richard.

...one of the issues with Linux is unlike Windows or MacOS there is no one "standard" version but several which are referred to as "distros".  Daz development (like most other software companies) would not only have to expand to accommodate supporting Linux but also choose which distro to focus on which could make users of others feel "left out".  Even the big firms like Adobe and Autodesk don't support it.

Even MacOS seems to take a "back seat".

  • Daz Studio 4.x works just fine under WINE in Linux (I use Mint 22.1 and Lutris with the nvidia-libs extension). There are several tutorials both here on the forum and on the Internet at large.

Daz Studio 6.x (AKA Studio 2025) doesn't work yet...

...as I recall, there were issues with stability of the Nvidia drivers and some controls/tools being sluggish or not working properly.
