Help... I need a way to sort my runtime!

I wasn't satisfied with the way D|S managed metadata and sorted products, so I just install my products in separate folders, and make each one a base directory.  If I have a product made for multiple generations, it goes in the newest compatible directory.

    • Millennium
    • Genesis 1
    • Genesis 2
    • Genesis 3
    • Genesis 8
    • Genesis 9
    • Creatures

I sort other products into genre directories.

    • Urban
    • Household
    • Nature
    • SciFi
    • Historical
    • Fantasy
    • Comedy
    • Horror
    • SpecialEffects

I personalize my own categories this way, using DIM to uninstall, change directory, and install again.

The filter string speeds up my sorting.  If I filter using "sis 3", I'll find much of my Genesis 3 content.  If I follow using " 7" (space-7), I'll find even more, but I also have to uncheck the false hits.  Again, it's just a time saver, not a perfect one-click.  Best of success.

    Hallelujah!

I use the database within Daz itself to create categories on the fly and then place each item I install into it's right place (Right Click Asset > Categorize) .. I've done this since day dot .. and can create categories on the fly and drop things into them .. For instance .. I might have:

    Hair > Female > Short
Hair > Female > Shoulder Length
    Hair > Female > Long
    Hair > Female > Ponytail
    Hair > Female > dForce

    or

    Clothing > Female > Dresses > Short
Clothing > Female > Dresses > Knee Length
    Clothing > Female > Dresses > Long

Then, if I need Short hair - I just look in that category and find what I want.

Can go to as deep a level as you need with it with as much specialized categorizing as you need ..

But as I say - I've done this since Day Dot and have built it up over the years .. so I'd hate to start from scratch and categorize everything I've got!!

Oh my... Sorry I was away today and just saw all the responses... Some I knew about... some I didn't... It will take me a while to figure out what to do.  I should have thought of this when I first started using Daz but honestly I never imagined I'd fill a 4tb drive!!!

Thank you all for your responses.  I understand most of them.  I am going to work on it this week and see what I can do to move/compress some stuff on the hard drive.  It's really nice having things all togther when Daz opens.  With my new windows 11 upgrade Daz seems to be working faster.  I'm afraid if i compress everything then Daz will be slower???

Stay well one and all.. Keep the suggestions coming... I could use all the help I can get!  hugzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm lazy. I don't bother with categories, etc. Awhile ago I used DIM to remove the old generations of characters and clothes from my runtime. DIM does the work nicely.

I did a search of DIM for names such as Victoria 4, V4, Michael 4, M4, etc. I clicked "uninstall" for each individual character and their clothes. Then I chose a new folder for each character or category. I had DIM install those characters to their respective folders or runtimes.

I could have one folder or "runtime" for Generation 4, etc.

In the end I had one Runtime for Genesis figures, etc.

It's my easy and lazy way.
