Is there a way to tell an object NOT to accept shadows?

Is there a way to tell an object NOT to accept shadows?  I seem to remember there was a way a long time ago.  I have this conformer that is as close to the skin as I can get it to go and yet it's still casting unwanted shadows on the skin making it look like it's somewhat floating.  I've tried my best to get it closer to the skin in ZBrush but it's still casting shadows on the skin.  If I could tell the object NOT to accept shadows that would clear up my dilema.  Is there a way to achieve this?  I don't want to turn off shadow casting via the lights I just don't want to the conformer to accept shadows.  I could have sworn there was a way to do that... maybe in the old 3Delight days?  Can't remember off hand.

Thank you

Richard

It'd be either 3delight or filament. From what I recall Iray doesn't have that because of the way it handles light and shadows

I kinda figured that but I was hoping!  LOL

There are several ways to do it in 3Delight, but the easiest was using Age of Armor's Advanced light sets, which allowed al kinds of amazing tricks with individual lights ignoring spedifiied objects, parts of objects, or surface zones with specific parameters..  That said, some of those functions were hampered or partially crippled in later versions of DS, and as I haven't done any 3DL renders in ages, I can't tell you how well they still work today.

To do it in Iray, you really have to cheat and make two renders, one of everything that's "normal" and one of just the item that you don't want shadows on with re-balanced lighting, then combine them in post.

Thank you but I'm wanting to achieve this from an iRAY render so it's a no-go and it's OK.  Thank you again!

One thing that might work is making an object black and nonglossy and then handle color by emission. That way, lighting is providing nothing.

Of course, you then don't have highlights or shading at all, but that's kind of tied into shadow to begin with.

Thank you but this is a conformer I made, body hair, scruff to be exact.

Ah, so what you are actually asking for is the body hair to not cast shadows, or the skin to not accept shadows from one specific thing.

    You could use softer lighting?
