paint a pattern or shape on hair texture

im very new to any sort of 3d content creation. is it possible to paint a shape  or pattern directly on to the hair that goes beyond just simple different shades of color?

If they're transmapped hairs, depending on UV layout, yes, you can make it with LIE, Diffuse Overlay with Iray Shader. Geo-shell or iray Decal node can also make it work. You can make the texture maps with Image Editor or directly paint the texture with Blender or Adobe Pt.
