Carrara 8.5 Pro on Intel MacBook Pro running Win 11 Pro through VMWare Fusion Pro
Hey all. As stated in the title, I have installed Carrara 8.5 Pro on an Intel MacBook Pro running Win 11 Pro through VMWare Fusion Pro and am looking for the best configuration for it to run smoothly. The MacBook Pro is a 2019 6-core model with 1 TB HD and 32 GB of RAM. As of now, I allocated 160 GB of HD space and 8 GB of RAM, and when I open the software, it starts off fine. But, when I go to do anything, like add a simple sphere or quick render, it freezes up and I have to force quit the app. Any good ideas here to help move this forward? I want to get away from using an old Mac to do all of my 3d modelling in Carrara and was hoping this would work. Thanks in advance!

while I am not a Mac user, I do know Carrara is very touchy about graphics
toggling the openCL or Software options in preferences might help
And could have used BootCamp
+ but alrite then Thanx
Thanks wendyluvscats. I'll give that a shot.
@ed3D, I don't know much about the technical stuff to make a Mac work with Windows, but found that doing this with VMWare and Win 11 was all at no cost. And I wanted something easy and cheap since I don't do a ton in Carara these days. Although I do like to still dabble in it. I'll look into BootCamp and see what that's all about.
@wendyluvscats Appreciate the helpful advice, but no luck toggling off the OpenGL. Oddly, I looked at my Browser and the only Objects are Leaves. This is a fresh install of everything here. VMWare Fusion Pro, Windows 11 Pro and Carrara 8.5 Pro, along with a bunch of other things I had in my Product Library. Maybe I'll uninstall everything except Carrara and try again. Maybe a fresh install of Carrara might help too. The error I keep seeing is Rendering Failed in the top left corner of the Carrara screen. And that happens even before any rendering happens. Never had this kind of problem on any of my older Mac installs, so kinda lost here.
Well , all for Free is good
+ have Relatives that use Boot Camp and they Like it
Thanx
I use Carrara in Windows 11 on my M2 Utlra MacStudio using Parallels. It's not free, but it works very well. All my plugins work and Parallels is very good at sharing files so Ididn't have to move anything. I've only had a few issues. One was associated with a Windows update. You can read my thread here:
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/660771/carrara-and-mac-with-m2#latest
I use carara on 2 Mac computers together with Parallels, once on an Imac with i7 processor 32 gbram and win 10 and once on a mac mini m2 and win 11 everything runs very well as already described by Brian. I only had to adjust a few things. I also tested it with Fusion at the beginning, you can change a lot there, which is probably the problem for you too.
So, I didn't see the OpenGL dropdown for Interactive Renderer under the General Scene Settings. I changed that to Software and no more crashing, so far. And I even turned the OpenGL use display lists back on, and no crashing, or no Rendering failed. However, now I have to figure out why, after either making the first pan with the Hand tool or moving an object, it jumps to that view where the move was initiated and objects disappear and then reappear after the move is finished. If moving the object, it disappears, then reappears where it's moved to. Not ideal, for sure, so have to figure that part out. Thanks for all the help so far. I'll keep trying new things and reply back with what I find.
I read through your whole thread, @BrianP21361, in hopes of finding a solution. That solution very well might be Parallels, but I'm going to keep trying this for a bit first. Thanks for posting it!
try changing the texture spooling settings
@WendyLuvsCatz Thanks for the help. Tried that but no luck. And sorry for the delay. Work has kept me insanely busy. I'll keep trying different things and will update here with any progress. Thank you a million!
