When I lived in Florida the electricity would go off relatively often (big thunderstorms, hurricanes, crazy or fragile ancient person drivers, etc...) At those times I appreciated having an acoustic piano.  No electricity needed.  I could open my normally closed windows, and practice however well or badly for hours and spread the entertainment or misery all around the neighborhood knowing that everybody had their windows open and no auditory compeitition! devil

Complaint:  I keep getting an advertisement at the top of some web pages that asks "Want to Retire Comfortably?"  and goes on to explain "If you have a portfolio of $500,000 then download...."   Arghhhhh... If I had a half-million dollars to invest I wouldn't be getting my investment advice from a spam ad! angry  However, I do realize that keeping my paltry $1000 life savings in a bank at a half-percent interest isn't going to get me very far ahead very quickly. sad  There must be something illegal (and safe) I can invest in. devil

Also complaint: Being in the "ancient" club I also get the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) magazine each month and on the cover of the magazine is an 8 by 10 color glossy photograph of one of a handful of ex-famous actors who have made millions and millions of dollars when they had their looks and who apparently still have need of at least some sort of publicity so they give an interview and describe how much better their retirement is than mine.  It makes me feel soooo much better. frown  I wonder if they get their investment advice from spam ads.

I still have some of that stuff called film.  Some 120 roll film, too.  And 220 roll film.  One of my film backs to the Hasselblad has a light leak, though, and I don't know which one it is.  But the 120 back is fine.  Some of that film is B&W.  I don't know of many places that even process roll film anymore, or any film.  I think the nearest place to me is at least an hour's drive away.  indecision

...great song. I should hum the title lyric melody that every time I check my Megabucks Lotto ticket.

Currently I take the line from It's a wonderful life "Wish I had A Million Dollars..." only to follow it up with "oh well..."

    ...+1.

I get their digital version. Love to take some of those vacations they advertise. Sadly SS wouldn't even cover the air fare.

Some of the best photos I ever took were with an old bellows camera using 120 b/w film, doing my own processing.  The bellows camera was sold decades ago along with the rest of my collection of antique-ish cameras and 35mm SLRs.  I'm all digital now days but I do still have a modern Canon 35mm pocket camera and a Mamiya 330 (or was it a 550?) twin-lens reflex camera that used 120 film.  I've got it in a hard padded case with lots of accessories and adaptors.  Marvelous camera but now just an expensive curiosity taking up space in my attic.  Sold all my darkroom equipment at auction for pennies on the dollar.  There's thousands of dollars that went down the drain. sad

Just FI, when I get bored and frustrated I tend to do radical things to fix that situation.

So, to make sure my reputation as running off to ruin my life doing wildly crazy things, I've decided to buy Houdini Indue and get a copy of Nuke non-commercial and learn to be a visual effects artist to augment my writing and music income. indecision

Been waning to work in VFX for years.. known a few travelling VFX/video editor types in my life and it will pay the bills if I can get a steady stream of jobs.

This will mean an investment in hardware and software, along with time, and I'll be learning and cranking out portfolio projects while I continue to contract out as a programmer, write, and compose music. surprise

I want to be out of programming, forever, in 5 years.  That is my plan. devil

I always wanted to be a tram driver, you always know where you're going and when you get there you just drive right back :)

If my eyes were perfect and my foot worked, I'd go to truck driving school and do long haul cross-country truck driving!  Since I have no kids, no wife, no girlfriend, and no significan other it would be the perfect fit.  Modern semis have Internet, integrated smartphones, and a sleeping cab that's better than some flophouse hotels I've stayed in!!

Alas, I have to play he hand I'm dealt... indecision

They also have satellite communications and GPS that are always on and hooked to your truck's systems. Along with cameras that watch you while you are driving. So you can look forward to messages like:

"You exceeded the speed limit by 2mph for three seconds at 0121. A notation has been made in your driver's file."

"You aren't checking your mirrors often enough. A notation has been made in your driver's file. "

"You didn't use a turn signal for your last lane change, A notation has been made in your driver's file."

"Your radio is too loud. A notation etc etc."

Not to mention waking you up with a message demanding to know why you stopped when you could legally drive for another thirty minutes. Waking you with a buzzer that gets louder and louder until you read the damned message. When your delivery appointment is two days away, you're one hour away from it, and this is the last place that you can park where there's food, restrooms, and showers until you get there.

And now Govts want to use the tracking data to give you a ticket every time you violate the most minor of traffic laws. (Such as the aforementioned no-turn-signal, rolling across Kansas at 0200, the only vehicle within miles...) And a $100 ticket in a car could be over $1000 in a truck.

I'm glad I was able to retire at 55. It's all fun now.

...the only way to circumvent that is to be an independent, but then you have to buy the rig, insure it, pay for servicing, fuel, repairs, be your own logistics/sales manager. etc.

That is slowly becoming impossible. The DOT is trying to require that those systems be in all interstate trucks, even the owner operators. Some companies that use owner-operators already require them. The big joke is that the EPA is requiring Diesel Exhaust Fluid be used in all trucks to curb air pollution, when the ingredient in DEF that cuts pollution is a major component in homemade explosives. It used to be hard to find, now you can buy it in any truckstop!

    Brilliant!   angry

I have a chest freezer in my spare room that is almost full of unused film. Seriously, it comes to about 3" from the top. Still have my Mamiyas and my Canons, as well. My problem is that I can no longer carry the heavy stuff around.

I was seriously pissed when Canon came out with the EOS lens mount which meant that none of my Canon FD mount lenses would be useful with digital. I had a 10D with an EOS mount grafted onto it, it wasn't easy, but now there are adapters for the Olympus Pen series, which are pretty nice. My FD lenses live again!

I just wish that modern cameras looked as good, as elegant, as the classics. I'd love a digital Miranda Sensorex or Mamiya Auto XTL! But they're all black and lumpy. Bleaugh.

...dreading tomorrow.  Have to get up early to take a crowded bus downtown to the County Courthouse. Then have to sit all day hoping my name doesn't get called. After that, it's another crowded bus home in the late afternoon.  Supposed to be in the mid to upper 80s as well. I really wish there was some kind of "contentious objector" status I could claim as I don't feel right about determining someone else's guilt or innocence.

At least I can take my own lunch from home so I don't have to spend a fortune. Still will have to buy coffee though.

Still not looking forward to the experience.

Maybe I should wear a bunch of outlandish clothes and a boot on my head like Vermin Supreme does. How could they not excuse me then?

Well, my Canon A1's were black (had two bodies, one with an inexpensive auto winder from Spiroflex - I think that was the name of them).  The Hasselblad was mostly black with a little bit of chrome trim.  I had the prism viewfinder for doing weddings.  I used the regular collapsible hood when doing portraits and scenic and fashion models.

I used a 4x5 view camera once.  Rented it for a weekend and did some tabletop commercial type shots.  Came out beautiful!  Can't scan them to show anybody, because I printed them at 16x20!  Most of my later scenics I printed at that size, too.  Some earlier ones I did on 11x14.  I used print film for my scenics, not transparency film.  Used a rental lab to do my prints.

My wedding setup cost me $2,500 at the time, mid 1980's.  The new digital Hasselblads would cost as much as my 2003 Camry XLE!!!  surprise   (a $30,000 car when I bought it).  So...that's not going to happen any time soon.

Thanks :) We're getting some weather here, a massive storm front is heading in from Bass Straight with 6-8. meter waves along the surf coast and gale force winds. Right now is quiet but moody, you can feel electricity in the air. Think everything at our place is safe enough. And wow the old church down the road from us a ways burned down as well, must be something going around today iz usually quiet :)

Yeah, that interminable waiting for jury duty pick process should include free bread and circuses (after you sit through the "1950's "How To Be a Juror" movie.)

They should at least have a buffet and pinball machines and fish aquariums. enlightened

Can you imagine a government public waiting room with fish aquariums?  Green water, and disintegrating fish on the top!

I can also get around a *little* without the boot, to the bathroom and back, with a cane.  Agazin, it's going to take time for the foot stub to toughen up and the muscles to get used to how things ae.

    Ugh, happy Monday. indecision

This mornings phone prep for tomorrows phone interview went well.  The job is in Conneticutt, not really sure I want to move there but it's worth a shot.   I guess we'll see.

Phone interview this afternoon, I consider it a long shot but it's worth a try.  It's here in Austin.

After the 1PM phone interview, it's beer time!  Beer and chips and yogurt/cucumber dip with pita chips! laugh

Wednesday it's getting my custom boot measured for, then a bank run, then with any luck the ret of the week will be quiet and I can pretend I'm on vacation for a few days, relax, make music, and write.
