Subsurface Color/Strength Maps?

Hey, all! It's your friendly neighborhood Supernoob Phoenix again. I have a question for you all about Subsurface Color/Strength Maps. I'm using DS4.9, and Age of Armour's Subsurface Base Shader. Does anyone know if it's possible to generate a SSS Color and SSS Strength map from an existing Diffuse color map? For instance, I have alongtimeago's Mei for K4 diffuse map applied to Genesis 1, and would like to apply a SSS Color and Strength map to Genesis to really amp up the quality of my render, but Mei for K4 didn't include any SSS maps. Can anyone help me out? Thanks! ~* Phoenix DeFalco *~

hi, you can generate a greyscale map in PS or similar via 'desaturate' and 'curves' , plug it into the SSS channel and set a colour, or use 'hue/saturation' for the map and leave the colour as white.

I'll try that. Here's a follow-up question: looking at the V5 Bree texture maps that came with Genesis 2 Female, there are a number of SSS Color maps for the various parts of G2F (Face, torso, limbs etc.) Looking at those, they are very similar to the diffuse maps, but have red around the mouth/nose/eyes, and where the maps meet on the model (upper thighs and near shoulders on limb maps, lower buttocks, head/neck and collar zones on torso, etc.) Is there a way or a program that will generate SSS Color maps that have this type of layout?

there is a way, just take into your painting app, add a layer and paint on your SSS colour in the areas you want it, then save out as a new image.

  • Huh...I'll have to give that a go...Thanks, 3anson

There's some debate as to the need of maps like that. In many cases setting subsurface color map the same as the diffuse map seems to work well enough.

    I dunno. ;)
