Anyone else use Blender for non-cloth dynamics?

Hi all,

I've gotten pretty tired of waiting for dynamics to hit DS and frankly I don't think they every will, for whatever reason. I've used blender for fluids a couple times and it works great. Here's an example render I did of blender fluids (the wine) being able to work perfectly with shaders. This was accomplished by exporting the cup to blender, extruding the outside to prevent the mesh leaking, rendering a fluid interaction and then exporting the fluid object back into DS.

I've recently started looking into doing dynamic hair and doing the same thing as I did with fluids. Anyone else do this? Hair is much harder than fluids, but look at some of the examples of hair out there. This is one that struck me:

If anyone does this, I would love to start a discussion about it!

Various dynamic hair systems can look very good but beware, you will not be able to export Blender's dynamic hair to Daz Studio.

You can convert Blender hair to a mesh...and if you've frozen the simulation at a specific pose, then actually you can...but it isn't dynamic any longer (of course), but it is better than manually styling it to fit that pose.

Yeah of course you can, but then, the magic is gone so to speak : D

You should check out the following thread before giving up hope on dynamics in DS

I suspect it is still somewhat away, since only the Poser version is near completion, but it looks like an interesting development

Right, of course. As with the fluids I would do the same thing. Pose my figure and export them as an obj. Grow hair from where I want and animate it. Save a mesh of the ideal frame, import it into DS, adjust it and then apply shaders.

I've given up. When I say "given up" I mean I am going out of my way to learn how to do it otherwise because I do not have faith in their desire to provide it. If it does show up I will happily transition, but I've held my breath way too long. Kendall Sears has been working on the most promising direction, imo. It seems to be a personal project and he hasn't really done anything in a while that I've noticed, but his project seems to be the only real attempts I know of and that gets a ton of respect from me.

Edit: Looking at that thread you linked, though, I'm more optimistic. I'd pay big money for that.

From what I have read the dynamics are done in an external engine which, we have been told, will cost $50. There are then plug-ins for each app (ie Poser, and later Carrara and Daz Studio) to send the necessary data to the engine, and receive back the reply. As you said it looks good, but we will have to wait and see if it ever arrives.

DCC costs $50 too and I have that. Physics are the secret to get me to up end my pockets (for anyone listening)

I've done a couple of fluid sims...and yep, run the sim in Blender, 'freeze', back into Studio...

You could probalby turn shape keys to morphs for some items (like fluid sims could work).
