I figured out how to render and browse the internet

Uncheck 'multi-threading' in your preferences.

I can now use the internet while I render. I'm sure it sacrifices some render performance, but at least it's togglable!

    This will be helpful thanks!

  • Yeah, there are times you want to give every bit of performance to the renderer, and times where it'd be nice to have it work in the background behind some other light task, like a little browsing. Definately nice to have the option to keep it from taking all the cores if you don't need it to.

With today's modern computers you probably do not want to disable it completely, if all you want to do besides rendering is browse the Internet. Most of today's computers have 4 or 8, or even more threads they can work with. To conviniently browse the Internet, you need two. So when you are truning multi-threading off completely, you are sacrificing resources that you will not actually be using while browsing the net.

A more performance-friendly solution is to go to Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del on Windows, and choose Task Manager), go to the Detauils tab, and find "DAZStudio.exe". Right click on this, choose "Set affinity", and unclech two random threads that you do not want Daz Studio to use. Allow it to use all others. This will enable to browse the net, and still have better performance.

What's nice about this method, is you can toggle it during render. So you have a long render going on, disable 2 threads for DAZ while you browse the net, then enable all threads while you go out shopping or watch TV. All during the same render.

If you want the least performance impact possible just download battle encoder shirase and limit DS by -3%. This will prevent it from taking the full computer and leave you 3% cpu time for other stuff. I browse the internet and listen to pandora while I render. Even 2% works, but I prefer 3%.

I haven't used this for a while, so I may be wrong, but I didn't think you could change affinity mid-render.

You're setting this at the OS level, outside of Daz Studio, so it can be set at any time.

I need my cpu going full speed ahead, this is why I have a phone or pad or a happy-meal toy with an IP address for the internet.

There are times when I go the other way...(I can in Linux)...set everything CPU related to that the renderer will max out, run at nearly realtime and eat every electron in sight.

As fond as I am of the "set the processor affinity" method of throttling programs, I'd recommend something else. If you're using IRAY, switch to GPU rendering. In the Photoreal settings, check the GPU and uncheck the CPU. (On my machine, at least, the GPU alone is considerably faster than GPU+CPU).

I have a quad core i7, and when I use the GPU, it it ends up only utilizing 2 CPU cores, which means that anything else (web, CAD, even another DAZ instance used to edit another scene) moves decently. I use a 980 Ti, but you don't have to go that crazy: just get an inexpensive nvidia card like a 970.

Seriously... Check out BES instead of worrying about disabling whole threads.

    Ditto this!  Works good!

hmm, do you render in Iray? Because I am in the internet while my images get rendered and I render in 3Delight.

I do that without messing with any settings.

I have never had a problem rendering in Iray while browsing, and I haven't done anything to make it happen. Maybe it's a problem for more resource intensive scenes than I have been rendering?

when I render I normally watch netflix at the same time so I just whip up the tablet to view netflex.  Sometimes I can do both using the PC, but then I would experience hiccups and don't really lik it.  I don't have this problem though when rendering with Reality.
