Can I go back to 4.8 if I don't like 4.9?

And the thumbnails can be anywhere from about 5KB to around 30KB..the rest is the metadata.

I've downloaded the 4.9 installers but nervous about installing it. I'm another pack rat that keeps copies of my installers.

I do have questions but I'm getting a headache trying to sift fact from speculation in the encryption thread. I personally, don't see myself using the daz connect feature mainly because I have an extensive library I keep on an external hard drive and have custom folders so I can find my content. The only smart content type thing I use is the search feature. I personally don't want or need direct connection to the store, ads, or product suggestions. I get why some want encryption and I also get why some are against encryption.  Instead of the good vs evil of encryption, I want to know how this feature impacts me as a consumer.

    1. In 4.9, can I organize my library on an external hard drive with custom folders? (I also have a path mapped to a Poser content library folder also located on my external hard drive.)2. Can I for personal use, edit texture files?
    3. Can I use my items in other 3d applications? If so, how many extra steps do I have to take to utilize my items?
    4. Will my scripts still work? If any are broken, which ones?
    5. Encryption? What is accessible vs inaccessible as far as editing? (Example, can I edit scripts? can I edit the object file in another application like hexegon?)
    6. Can I get locked out of my content? Is it linked to my specific computer I have this copy of daz studio running on? Or is encrypted content linked to my account?  If I close my account or daz closes, do I lose my content?
    7. If I close my account, would I lose access to my content?
    8. If Daz, goes bust is there a contingency plan to unlock content?

I've downloaded 4.9 to a serperate folder, and all stuff downloaded since 4.9 went live will be in the same folder. All DIM downloads prior to that has been renamed (plus I've lots and lots of backups).

I'll be using a disk image to restrore my system once I've tried 4.9 - presuming I do decide to try it.

I've backed up various files - such as:

    C:\Users\<YOUR_NAME_HERE>\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D

    C:\Users\<YOUR_NAME_HERE>\Documents\DAZ 3D

    C:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D

(and the backups/downloads where you have Install Manager files - and others perhaps.)

    E:\Documents\Daz 3D\InstallManager\Downloads 4-9

    E:\Documents\Daz 3D\InstallManager\Downloads 4-8

(and once installed - various sub-folders in here)

    E:\Documents\Daz 3D All Libraries

I keep the above as seperate backups, and have multiple copies on a serperate mechanical hard disk: a very large one.

Although having a backup is always a good idea, I just want to note on the record that 4.9 doesn't alter any of your previously installed products. Even the database stuff it does is done by making a new set of tables and importing in to there.

So while having a backup is good, just remember that 4.9 doesn't go all godzilla on your existing data and content.

    True, or it should be.

Errors and bugs and other such stuff happens, so yeh back up; any long-term computer user is (or should be) suitably paranoid. :)

what do we have to save as back up to be able to reinstall DS 4.8, can someone name the packages or is it just the I think 3 zip folders? The one for DS and the other two for default shaders and another one.

All the Starter Essentials packs should probably be saved, too...

Don't forget installers for plugins that aren't part of the D|S download — some are OK with any version after D|S4.5, but some (Dynamic Control, I'm looking at you) are locked to the exact D|S version they were released with and don't work on any other version.

    Such as:

    DAZPostgresqlCMS_9.3.4.exe
    DAZStudio_4.8.0.59_Win64.exe
    DS3_FBXExporter_2.0.8.25_Win64.exe
    DS3_TextureAtlas_1.0.1.7_Win64.exe
    DS4_3DBridge_1.5.0.59_Win64.exe
    DS4_GoZ_1.5.0.59_Win64.exe
    DSON_Importer_for_Poser_1.2.0.12_Win64.exe

Plus about another twenty items I have backed up... all over. :)

I have 3560 items, the metadata plus thumbnail totals 171MB, so average 49KB per product

Thank you. :-)  That's not so bad.

Thanks, also. :-)  I was on page 1 and didn't see your reply at first.

Okay, seems it is much work to make sure that DS 4.8 will work or that one have the option to reinstall DS4.8 without problems (even one have a back up or all zip folders) so DS4.9 not form me and if DAZ plans to fix their shop only for "conect" they won?t get any more money from me.

I installed 4.9, no issues but as I originally posted I haven't really used it so I had nothing to lose. I just wiped everything out, Uninstalled 4.8 and started over. It did set up differently though, instead of all in my Documents folder, the DAZ stuff goes into public. It does make it a bit more of a PITA, but maybe it's good. I'm not familiar enough with D|S to know.

Mr dandy mario DAZ_Rawb  I decide to bite you as mad dog to finish complain about these thing.devil

(I could return most of category, with reset DB etc now thoguh there seems some strange problem)

If you said we get mistake,, at first you need to said DAZ your document is really un-usable for user to

use smart content as actuall serching tool.  and why you have not push daz to offer more reliable product data,

for all daz shop items, then just offer empty product meta-data?  the empty product data is real mistake to serch items in smart content

do not you think so?  why you can said, lot of users have possibly been misusing the tools and saving their own custom categorizations as product metadata when they should be user metadata

if we missusing tool , it simply because DAZ problem .  no one hope to make original product meta-data at least for DAZ shop product.

but why we did it?  it is because DAZ could not offer them just offer , tool without data, then DAZ tell us to use it for serch content.

it is really foolish thing.  and most of user must get product from other shop too. or get free items. why we can only use daz items.

and why we can use smart content as smart, only for daz shop items (and some of them are still no real product data), in smart content,

and can not use for other package,  we can serch items in smart content efficently?

you may say,, you can categorize,, and can add compatibility then keep it as user_data.

but why we need to gather all items which offered as different package, then not see them as prodcut in smart content?

smart content only for DAZ shop items (but You can not offere still for all daz shop items) ?

Try Export User Data in DS4.8, then Re-Import Metadata in 4.9.

    +1 to this.

I think a lot of users have possibly been misusing the tools and saving their own custom categorizations as product metadata when they should be user metadata. Unfortunately this would have caused problems any time a product was updated in DIM, but in 4.9 it goes one step further and fetches all of your product metadata during your first connected session.

Could you explain the difference in saving "as product metadata" vs as "user metadata" please?

I have created some metadata for (for example) conversions of V4 and M4 skin materials to G2F and G2M - I just filled in names and file paths in the Content DB Editor windows and was unaware of any such distinction. Maybe I'm "misuing the tools" and didn't realise it?

(I haven't gone to full 4.9 yet, still using 4.6 for 3Delight and a 4.9 Beta for Iray purposes so I'd like to be forewarned and therefore forearmed of any problems I might see with "my" metedata)

Have you tried copying your DS 4.8 installation to another drive and opening that? When I was testing a new version of Octane Render plugin I copied my DS4.7 folder to another drive before installing v4.8 and both worked independently of one another. In fact, I've just opened DS4.7 which is still on my G:/ drive, opened a project, closed it and then opened DS4.8 on my C:/ drive, opened the same project without any problems. So unless the DS 4.9 installation has some new, year zero, nuclear reset code that searches every drive I assume DS4.8 could quite happily co-exist on another drive.

I tried 4.9, but QUICKLY went back to 4.8 once I realize that I had to tweak Iray Skin Materials. Was not a fan of that at all, especially since my 4.8 renders are so beautiful and don't require any color tweaks.
