4.8 vs 4.9 ???

All I hear is about the encryption agenda but nothing about advances in 4.9 ???

Is there anything that 4.9 can do that 4.8 can't do??????

I've only heard bug fixes. The one big change was "encryption" and Daz connect.  Daz connect lets you buy products inside Daz and now the files are encrypted, which means if Daz refuses giving you an encryption key, you cannot open your files anymore (including your render scenes, .duf are encrypted).

i don't believe that is true, all files are not encrypted.  As of right now there are 3 products in the store that are free with a 49.00 purchase to see how the encryption works, all other files are not encrypted but can be downloaded inside Studio, sort of an intertwined version of DIM. At this point you can still d/l your files manually, with Dim or Daz connect.  Daz Connect does not mean encrypted, it simply gives you an alternative to d/l your products.  I believe in 4.9 there have been improvements to both the Iray and 3Delight renderers and some bug fixes, what they are you would have to read the release notes. I have so far only tried the Beta version of 4.9, but there is a ton of info floating around both true and untrue, the only way to know I guess is to try it yourself and see how it works for you :)

Nothing that I can see so far. Some people are saying they are see an increase in render speed, so far I am not seeing that myself. Maybe they have better than my gtx 960 4gb graphics card or something, not too sure.

That is actually mostly wrong and a great example of a lot of the mis-information floating around.

Two big changes in 4.9 is the new version of the iRay renderer and Daz Connect. iRay improved their subsurface scattering with a moderate increase in speed for some things. Daz Connect is a new way to download and install your content from directly within Daz Studio and has a lot of niceties. For instance, if you load in a scene and there is stuff missing, it will prompt you about it and offer to automatically download what it needs to make it work provided it is in your account. Per file updates, meta data updates, and other things which improves the speed and quality of the product and experience. There is encryption, but that is only on products which are labeled as Encrypted Daz Connect (currently 3 products at the time of this posting). Other than that there is no encryption.

Common misconceptions people keep repeating which aren't true. You can use 4.9 and not need to use Daz Connect ever if you want to with a work offline feature. If you do want to use Daz Connect, since the Smart Content and Content Library experience is vastly improved in our opinion, you only need to login once to take advantage of it which downloads your personal keys. Beyond that you can connect or not as much as you want. There is an in-app store which is tucked away and there to show you contextual things with what you have selected. So if you're working on a scene and you can't find a hair you like for your figure, you can view the store tab that will have products filtered down to just those that contain compatible hair for what you're working on.

There is a bunch more technical information and more in depth information in the FAQ if you want to go read it. Just take what any non DAZ_ person or moderater says with a grain of salt when it comes to the actual implementation or how things work since it is hard for someone who hasn't been paying attention to it from day 1 (back in early November) to separate the speculation from the actual.

Iray has been updated to fix some issues that were present in the 4.8 version. There is a lengthy list of changes in the 4.9 thread (Software/Studio forum).

Of course so many people seem to think that sometime Daz will "refuses giving you an encryption key". That seems like a particularly curious concern, since Daz would be essentially refusing to sell you content.

  • Iray was updated. As well as some of the textures for Daz orignials not part of Daz studio, bug fixes but the big thing is DAZ CONNECT. I think the thing that is stoping most of us from pulling the trigger is the encryption of Daz connect. I don't like encryption on stuff I purchase it is annoying. So I won't purchase encrypted items.

Nothing you state here is factual.  Please do not spread disinformation.  The primary feature of DAZ Connect is for downloading and installing content, NOT for buying content within the app (though you can).  Only specific things are encrypted, not everything you buy or install via Connect as your imply with your statements.

You are absolutely entitled to have your opinion. This is not opinion, this is blatant falsehood.

Smart Content has also recieved a major overhaul.  Previously, Smart Content was mostly useless; now it is actually worthwhile to use and as they continue to clean up and add metadata, it will become more useful.

There are new versions of 3Delight and Iray.  I can't speak for 3Delight, but I find this version of Iray to be more stable and perhaps a little quicker. I'm not sure about the fix to translucency in the Uber shader... I've been using the beta since it came out and can't really recall if I ever compared the results between 4.8 and 4.9.
