Daz Install Types Encrypted Content

Here's the thing. On new content if it lists this, will it work with older versions of D/S? I'm certain it's been addressed elsewhere. On installers The Product Includes (example) DSON installer, is there also content for older D/S version's that's not encrypted? Will the encrypted items that have DSON parts be encrypted (and still work in Poser?). I see a big drop off on new product due to confusion as there's no sticky that explains this very well at all.

And contend that is encrypted will not work with older versions of DS, because the older version of DS can not uncrypt it.

However, content is still available as unencrypted files for manual and DIM download in most cases. From what has been said in the BETA threads during the past couple of months, new content will mostly remain available though the regular channels, except for those items specifally marked as "DAZ Connect only".

    From the FAQ:

Will the DSON Importer for Poser plugin work with products installed using Daz Connect?

The DSON Importer for Poser plugin will not work with encrypted files downloaded and installed using Daz Connect.

The plugin will continue to work with products installed through Daz Install Manager.

Sooo, if I do understand this right, encrypted files will only be decrypted WITHIN DAZ|Studio (4.9 obviously). No more studying of and/or editing of  those .duf files outside of DS.

It is just a question of time, how long DAZ need to mark each content with "DAZ Connect only". Currently they have the chance to row back and don't lost a lot of customers.

Daz has sais, repeatedly, that old content will remain in the format it is already in.

Umm and what's the problem with that? In fact I think it's good people can try out encrypted files now to ease the fears that they cannot be edited or lock the user out from customizing which was one of the big fears regarding encryption.

As apposed to just letting people speculate what encryption does? If an answer can be given sooner than later in a form of freebies so they can see for themselves then I see no issue with that. It's not like tomorrow everything sold is going to be encrypted. These were just samples. That's how I look at it. How many thread pages have gone off on wild rumors as to how encryption works? Well, now you have an answer and can see for yourself. Better than trying to explain over and over when people still fear it's the end of the world.cool

  • Will Daz 4.9 Encrypted content export via FBX or OBJ ?  If so, what's the point of encryption in the first place?

Will Daz 4.9 Encrypted content bridge to Hex? Zbrush? Bryce? etc.

My understanding is the encryption basically means in it's native Studio format, the product cannot be distributed. Eg copy a product sold here and upload to the web because part of it is encrypted. Basically, the aim of the encryption is to stop products from the Daz store from being pirated. You can still export via obj or other format, edit etc, that Daz has no real control over. It's in the format for Studio they are protecting IE, products sold as is to this market.

Encrypting content will not be enough to stop piracy and Daz knows it. What they're trying to do is to make it more difficult to pirate the content, hoping that some pirates decide it's not worth the extra work. Basically they want to reduce piracy, they don't expect it to stop.

In the end it's all a fight against piracy whether it can be stopped or reduced etc...

The people who fear it won't download it even if it was free which in reality this wasn't. I wouldn't say I fear it but I do think it may hamper how I work...I will try 4.9 eventually but I'm waiting a while. I've been caught before with installing new releases as soon as they're out. I prefer to wait and make sure all the bugs are squished.

As an amazingly wise man (who lived in my old neighborhood) once told me, "Locks exist for the sole purpose of keeping honest people honest."

On a related matter, he also said, "Locks don't stop criminals; they just slow them down.  Hopefully, long enough."

Basically, throwing a couple or three items (less than 1/10th of 1% of the entire store content) that are exclusively in the encrypted format, to go with the launch, as freebies, actually makes sense...it gives users something to play with (and gripe about)  AND an indicator of 'like or hate'.  It also doesn't indicate a change in policy or intentions.

They're not freebies. You have to buy them, or you can get them as a bonus if you spend $49 or more.

Yeah, they really are bonus items.  Which is going to limit them even more...

And the fact those 3 items are the only DAZ connect items I cannot find in the 4.9 public beta  convinces me of my choice to stay with DS 4.7 and avoid DAZ connect is the best one cheeky

    Not the release version?

There is a chance that because you are in the beta that is why they aren't showing up.

Yeah that is motivation to replace my release build which is still DS 4.7, uhm. I don't think so.

Did you offline install using the Beta? It's one of the noted bugs that was repaired from last beta to the live release version.

You can't really expect to use a Beta version and expect to see no bugs, a beta version with no bugs is actually a release version right?

You mean there are release versions of software with no bugs?

I do spend waaaaaay to much time in the Carrara forum ....................

  • Lol, Well we can wish.

I just mean that it seems that you are using a Beta version with a known bug relating to the issue your experiencing, which has been addressed in the full release version.

So to say well I'm not going to upgrade because the Beta has bugs just seems a little odd. As the Beta is not an actual general release and you would expect it to be less stable and more buggy than a release version.

But thats just me, whatever works for you. :)

Well, I'm not in the beta version and I've asked twice in other threads- where are those freebies located? I can't call them up in Smart Content anywhere.

So just to make sure I'm understanding the issue correctly. And I wasn't meaning to say there isn't an issue, just that it's hard to troubleshoot on an old version.

Your installing the freebies in Daz 4.9 using Daz Connect and when you have selected, say for the Dragon lady outfit, Genesis 3 Female and the Wardrobe Drill down. It's not appearing in your 'Installed' content? Is it in 'available' content?

The problem is, the DRM front in the fight on piracy has been deployed in multiple battles on multiple fronts, and it hasn't ever either quelled piracy or done much beyond bothering and offending people. EA/Origin and Simcity. Amazon and the Kindle. Apple and iTunes. It's happened many times and many places, and quite honestly it's never been worth the bad will and reputation it's engendered.

Amazon now makes it possible to have non-encrypted kindle files -- which is pretty much the standard. iTunes now has DRM free music and in fact replaced DRMed files (and even low quality ripped -- or pirated -- mp3s with higher quality DRM free files. Simcity became usable offline. And so on, and so on.

I expect I'm going to get some of the encryted content down the line, but it would need to really appeal to me before I did. And I'm indiscriminate -- I buy tons of stuff. Despite having made purchases over $49 yesterday, I decided against the bonus files because none of them fitted a need I had and they left a bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't worth the hassle of managing my render machine's install as well as my design machine's install with the increased overhead.

If the three bonus assets offered today with a purchase of one of the 'free' sale's new releases were unencrypted, I'd probably grab the Katherina hair purely to qualify for them -- that would be four products for the price of one! With the encryption... mrph. I have a lot of long women's hair assets already and none of the free assets fill any needs I can see in the short term, so it's not worth it to me.

(This is all made worse by the number of other stores where assets are available sans encryption, of course.)

(I did, however, buy Growing Up for Genesis 3 Males, so apropos of nothing, thank you for putting out yet another great product.)

I don't know if this helps but I found the freebies in smart content without a problem

Lynsey is in  People - Female - Real World

The Dragon Armor under Wardrobe - Armor

The Storage Room - Enviroments - Architecture - Interior

To find them to install in 4.9  I had to search the product name in the available items tab as I have a lot not installrd by connect.

Hope you can find your products  - Lynsey is my favorite of these

Thanks Louise. I'll go see if they're there. That's what I needed. (And thanks too, Design Anvil. You've been doing a super job on these threads, very patient. You and Male-M3dia have done an excellent job on these threads.)

Smart Content SUCKS. Seriously? Typing in  Lynsey gets nothing. I try Files. I try Products. I try People>Female and only Stylized is there. I try it with Content Filter on, and off. I take Lynsey out of the search, and try it the way suggested above. With Available, with All. Forget this garbage!

USE YOUR CONTENT LIBRARY>PRODUCTS. Bada-bing, bada-boom.  As Barbult so graciously told me on my art studio thread, Connect stuff will be in Products over there, (alphabetically) so why would anyone mess with Smart Content and continual searching? The Connect will not show up over there in Daz Studio/Poser Formats, simply go to Products. Hope this helps (it sure helped me.)

BTW, Content Library ROCKS in 4.9!!!!! Each item in Products has a little image now!!! WOOOOOT! And everything is listed, not just want you have installed. It's grayed out so you can tell you haven't installed it.

Um, I found Lynsey over in Products. Medieval Storage Room isn't in the M's. And not in Environments>Architecture>Interior, with Content Filter off/on. I tried Product and Files combinations with that off and on too, etc. No luck. EDIT: I unclicked Genesis 3 in the viewport, that was my problem. Solved!

In Smart Content: Products at the top (not files) Environments then I had Filter Content CHECKED. I had clicked an open area out in the viewport.
