Daz Studio 4.9 Daz Connect

I believe this may be discussed elsewhere but I couldn't find a thread that wasn't a complainy one and the search don't work so here I am starting a new thread. I would like an explanation of these new functions before I commit to this.  How does this impact my current Daz libraries?  Will I be able to have each item as a zip file in case something goes wrong (which often does). How will I be able to have a personal backup of my content? Does very old content have to be reinstalled now as Daz connect?  Does Daz connect mean you have to have an internet connection to use the content or only during the install? Hopefully this will have no affect on non Daz content but what about Daz content that was gifted to you? I am very apprehensive about this new version because I have spent thousands of dollars on content and I want it all even the tiniest stone.

WRT " I want it all even the tiniest stone", please define "want" as I dont believe this is a privalage granted by the new EULA.

what I would like to know is all the older stuff for daz4.8 and for g2f I had in my wish list, is that going to require me to use daz connect . or will I be able to still purchase & and install them with zips for daz 4.8?

Because I been trying to get the stuff off my wish list I have no interest in daz connect or 4.9, and if i can't finsh clearing my wish list out with out having to use connect them I'll just delete my wishlist

I have about 50% of my wishlist on discount today so Im going to try to get as much of them as I can if I don't need daz connect.

It's good to see this does not affect fbx and Poser CR2 exportability.

I mean I want all my content that I purchased even the tiniest stone. Why would that not be covered under EULA?

OK I saw that thread that is why I opened a new discussion because it did not answer my questions.  What happens to products installed manually as they are not in my product library because they were given to me by say a content creator for some reason or other.   How will I be able to have a personal backup of my content? Does very old content have to be reinstalled now as Daz connect?

    Read the faq:

This has been answered many times already.

DAZ Connect is currently optional (for most items, except those that say "DAZ Connect only"). Everything else, including new content, will still be available as manual&DIM download (you might just check your Product library).

(EDIT: I recommend downloading the  BETA version first; it has some bugs, but you at least can see what this all is about without touching your current installation).

DAZ Connect items will be stored separately from your regular folder structure, in a subfolder you can specify. It will not use your current folder structure and will not place items in there as DIM does. As far as Backuping you can back-up the encrypted files (if you download a product through DAZ Connect) just fine; you will have to backup the encryption key, too, though.

    From the FAQ:

Do I have to re-download all of my products?

No, but if you choose to update a product to benefit from the live functionality, the latest updated version of the product will be re-downloaded through the Daz Connect service. Daz Install Manager product updates required you to re-download the entire product. Daz Connect allows you to get incremental changes, making updates more efficient. Once installed using Daz Connect, Daz Studio keeps you notified of available updates as well as other content to consider.

What will happen with the content already on my hard drive(s)?

Your previously installed content remains untouched after installing Daz Studio 4.9. Content that is not available through Daz Connect will remain untouched. Content available through Daz Connect will indicate they are installable using Daz Connect. If you decide to install these products using Daz Connect, then they will be managed by Daz Studio and will benefit from live updates to metadata and files. If you decide not to install these products using Daz Connect, then they will continue to work as they did before and will not benefit from live updates.

Will the products I already own keep working?

Yes, any previously installed products will continue to work. When you update to Daz Studio 4.9, all products that are compatible with Daz Connect will be highlighted. If you decide to install the products through Daz Connect by right-clicking and choosing “Install,” the upgraded version will be installed and will benefit from in-application update notifications from that point forward. If you decide not to upgrade a product, it will continue to function as before. Products not supported by Daz Connect will keep their previous functionality and must be updated through existing workflows, such as Daz Install Manager."

Will products from stores other than Daz 3D keep working?

Products from other stores will continue working the way they did prior to Daz Studio 4.9. These products do benefit from features that have been added by Daz Studio 4.9, but they cannot benefit from any of the Daz Connect specific features."

Can I use products installed through Daz Connect with other software?

Products installed through Daz Install Manager keep their previous functionality. Products updated to Daz Connect will not function with Carrara or the DSON Importer for Poser due to an inability to interface with Daz Connect web services, but all bridges (e.g. ZBrush, Bryce, Hexagon) and exporters continue to function as they have.

Products that are available in zip format or through Daz Install Manager will remain available.

Thanks to all you who keep refering to the thread I already read many times.Obviously someone is missing something (and it's not me)  because I've read this thread and it does not answer ALL of the questions I've asked.  Good thing I saved a copy of 4.8 exe

update - thanks BeeMKay, this answers all my questions.

me, too, last time I got lost of DAZ 4.6 and had many issues with 4.8 and some older scenes. So I have also saved not one but more copies of the daz 4.8 exe :)

This is very confusing. It's very poorly explained to the user who is brand new to Daz. This will turn off many new users.

Most was, but ALLIECAt is correct, some of the questions were not answered in the FAQ (about back-up of DAZ Connect downloaded files, for example), and some things are easier to access with some screenshots rather than mere words.

But the one I quoted has been answered many times as I previously said. People should start with the faq first then ask questions. There will be far fewer questions and threads then. And from the amount of threads now, the mods really need to start merging these so these questions are kept in one thread instead of five.

I want to know 4 things:
    * What happens if I buy a product which is "connect-only" and then that product retires, will I be unable to use it after that date?
    * What happens if I lose that  "connect-only" product, due to a hard drive crash or smth, will I be able to re-download it at a later date? Even to another computer? (Let's say that my computer gets stolen or breaks down)
    * Are there plans to phase out DIM and to not longer offer zips in the future?
    * Will I be able to use third party items with "connect-only", like a shader, a morph or a texture set procured somewhere else?

Hera, having used the Beta for a few months, I hope I can answer your questions...1) if a product retires, you should be able to use it since you are the authorized user and it remains in your library and on your computer, 2) you should be able to quickly reinstall the stuff you had after a crash be cause you are the authorized user and it is in your library even if you replace your computer or borrow one, 3) Plans to phase out things are in the nebulous future but the current thinking is that DIM remains around especially if you have a computer that is not directly to the internet, and 4) you can use every product with any other (and I might add that you can export obj's and other things too) just as you did before.

What happens currently when a product retires that you already bought? Is it still available to you?  The same thing happens with connect. People won't be able to purchase that product but you have it available to you even if it's removed from the store.

As far as dim being phased out, no. You still need access to all your already purchased content. But some items will be connect only from this point on.

Connect only deals with downloading your product, once it's in your scene you are able to use shaders and even export like you normally do.

All this information is in the faq.

...hmm, this sort of strikes me as being Daz's version "Auto Update".

One point in the FAQ that concerns me:

New products may begin to be offered through Daz Connect only.

So effectively people will eventually be required to update if they want to install new purchases.

I for one am still unhappy over changes to the shader mixer in the 4.7 update which broke three of my favourite and oft used tools, AoA's Advanced Lights, Atmospheric Cameras, and Graphic Art Cameras causing me to forgo working in 3DL much anymore.  Never was a big fan of UE due to the long render times (even compared to Iray CPU mode) and extreme load it places on CPU and memory resoruces,

Will vendors have any say in whether their content is encrypted?

  • I really like this product: http://www.daz3d.com/lynsey-for-genesis-3-female-s

I had it in my cart....Now I have to remove it. this is annoying. Oh well....moving on
