It didn't mean that much to me when I heard that Snape had died as I'm not into Harry Potter and had no idea who played him. Then it was pointed out to me that he was the fabulously villainous Hans Gruber in Die Hard. Ancient though it is, I loved that film and he undoubtedly helped to make it what it was. I noticed he was the same age as Bowie, and cancer took him too. Another one gone too soon. RIP, Alan.
What other famous British person will die at 69 of cancer this year, leaving us mourning their loss?

You have forgotten Lemmy Kilmister, okay he was 70 years of age but only for 4 days and died at 28th of december last year but also a famous british person
I recognized Alan Rickman in various roles over the years but in the Harry Potter series he was my favorite. What a tortured character he turned out to be.
This is very sad. His work not just on Die Hard and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves but also on Quigley Down Under turned him into an icon of screen villany. He will be sorely missed.
I'm still trying to get my head around the coincidences. Both 69, both British, both died of cancer, both with extremely distinctive voices, and I'm pretty sure they've both been on lists of weird celebrity crushes. And then there's Lazarus - Bowie's song and musical, and Rickman's character's character in the amazingly funny Galaxy Quest.
I'm not looking forward to telling my kids that Alan Rickman's dead though, as he has been a massive part of their childhood through the Harry Potter movies. He made a career out of being the man everybody loved to hate, and the world has lost yet another remarkable talent with his passing.
Alan Rickman's list of credits it extensive. My personal favorite role of his was as "The Metatron" in Dogma. But with so many films and so many well play some great villians as well as unbalanced heros, he will be missed.
Very sad news! I loved him in Harry Potter, but my endearing role for him was Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility and I also liked him in Love Actually.
Never seen the Harry Potter movies, never will, so no idea who Snape was. But Alan Rickman is definitely a sad loss.
And if I so boldly may make a suggestion. Please change Snape in the thread title to Alan Rickman. As the saying goes: "Heroes never die. They just change the actor." No idea if Snape was a hero and I believe there will be no more HP movies, but still, it's not the fictive character that passed away, it's the actor.
My favourite role of his was in Sense and Sensibility as well. So sad to see another well-known (and to many beloved) man die of cancer at 69, which is the same age as my father. Too soon to say goodbye to.
Galaxy Quest is one of my fafourite movies, and his Sherriff of Nottingham was true genius against the awful roaming accent of Kevin Costner. RIP Alan.

Agreed. His Sheriff was the best character in the movie... and only he could have pulled that off. Sad day.
Rats... That's a bummer... His is one of my alter egos... When I do Lord Vicore, it's his voice I imitate... Yeah, I've got issues. Lots of em... But that's sad news none the less.
:sigh: This has been a day full of bad news. You will indeed be missed, Mr. Rickman. Thank you for all your outstanding performances and never-to-be-forgotten characters. It was a pleasure knowing you, sir, if only on the screen.
Very sad. My favourite line of his (one that I've felt like using around here several times) - "Tell me, are you incapable of restraining yourself, or do you take pride in being an insufferable know-it-all?"
I'm crushed :( I so loved him in Love Actually and in that music video to Texas' In Demand song he was just incredible. Such a talented person, such a tragedy :(

Allen will live on when you read stories to your children in that voice like Joey Ramone does when I read C.S. Lewis to mine.

By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!

This is very sad news. As huge Potter fans, my kids will be upset. Such a wonderful character actor. I loved him as the Sheriff of Nottingham. R.I.P.

Please, God; not Charles Dance... or Tim Curry, Timothy Dalton or Anthony Daniels. Or anyone, in fact.

I think it was Truly, Madly, Deeply that made me realise what a talent he was. A great actor, so many great rolls. RIP Severus Snape.
:(
He was a great actor, I'm really sad to hear he is now gone.
RIP Alan

At least we did not have to "... and cancel Christmas ..."
This year has not started well.

I'm very saddened by his passing but for my son (24) it was truly gutting.

Bowie and Rickman! same week, what a horrible week! two of my favorite british gone. QEPD Alan.
He could make you truly love and rout for the bad guy to win.
He'll be greatly missed. RIP, Alan Rickman

He voiced the robot in Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy ,his voice was very distinct .....
