Is there a way to save complete charecters, including clothes, hair, etc., in DAZ|Studio?

One of the nice features in Bryce is through the create dialog, you can add complete charecters, including hair, clothing, , etc., in their PRESETS LIBRARY.  I don't even have to save the file imported into Bryce, once I made the necessary adjustments (view close up, and replace default sky with one of my own creation to keep the lighting forward on the figure when he or she is saved. Then, all I do is cruise the presets, double click to select the figure, and it imports into my scene where i position her (him) in the scene. I divide my preset gropus into the same base charecter wearing different clothing for different occasions, formal, casual, beach, etc.

I have maybe a hundred files I've managed to keep permantly in Bryce, which includes location props such as resort villas and sailboats, power boats and beach scenes, that I use as a base. I don't need to keep the file I imported from Studio once I saved it to my preset library. To date without counting to the last file, I must have well over 600 files, some of the same charecter wearing different outdits, saved as seperate files. Am I doomed to save every change as a seperate file that I can import separately into a blank Bryce file, which I would have to save to the preset library, delete the file, yet still have to save the original file in DAZ|Studio? I could pack a scene, if memory allowed, with hundreds of seperate figurea, distinct from one another. These hundreds of DAZ files are taking up signifigent blocks of my hard drive space (I had to buy a 3TB external hard drive to store the files I've archived, and it's taken over 1TB of space, (which I can't even believe).? Is there a way?

Save as Scene Subset and tick what you want included.

  • Perhaps I should have made clear I am more concerned to do wholly within DAZ|Studio what I can in Bryce, so I can, after saving a preset, load it and add to any scene? I prefer Bryce to DAZ in its environmental realism, but some advantages (lower memory of files, wease of animation, etc.) still makes Studio great software. I have hundreds of great models I can't transfer from one file to another within DAZ. If I could create a preset within DAZ, I could in effect save the charecter and delete the file. Like I said, even with the reduced file size vis-a-vis Bryce, I am wasting incredible amounts of hard drive space.

  • Thought the above post was an advertisement, just saw the answer LOL. Where does the preset figure go, so I know where to find it? organizing and finding these new charecters is the next step in my quest.

A scene subset will be saved in the location you choose...typically the Scene Subset folder in the content library.

What mjc1016 said: Save as->Scene subset, then navigate to where you want to put it.  (I maintain a library of all of the characters I've created, organized by base figure -- M4, V4, G2M/F, etc.).

You'll then be presented with a dialog that lets you select what scene elements you want to include in the subset; if you've already parented everything to your character, the "extras" won't be listed, as they are already part of the character.

Then, when you want to use that character in another scene, just do a File->Merge, and select that subset.

Then, when you want to use that character in another scene, just do a File->Merge, and select that subset.

Actually, you don't NEED to merge the subset...unlike a regular (full) scene it won't overwrite everything.

  • You don't need to do File->Merge. Just load the subset or double click on it and it will add it to your current scene. File->Merge can be used on an existing scene file to add it to the current scene. So that option works as well.

Saving wearables is also cool if you're only interested on saving clothing items. You select a character, save wearable, tick what clothing items you want to save. The nice thing here is that the wearable can be used on any character.

If you save it as a subset, it will show up in the "Unassigned" catagory in your Smart Content section.

Then, in the Content Library section, you can find it in Categories - Default - Unassigned - Set, right click on it, and assign it to whatever catagory you want to.

If you right click on "default", you can create a separate catagory for all of your saved creations. Then you can double-click on it to add it to any scene, in the same XYZ position and pose in which you saved it, complete with clothes, hair, etc.

(Your new category will appear in your Smart Content section, as well.)
